TV documentary!!
« on: January 04, 2003, 04:46:42 PM »
Dear friends, yesterday I was watching some TV and a cable channel that usually has documentaries about religion, it's a kind of american 60 minutes, an american programme. I saw it cause they said they would say something about the orhodox Church in USA, a parish and a priest will be interviewed and about the choir too.

It surprised me that when I saw that it looked a little bit strange. They showed the part of the Divine Liturgy where the priest says "Oh Lord Bless thy people, and bless thine inheritance" but he said it with the words "you and yours" and when the choir sung "We have seen the true light". The choir chant caught my atention, they were not dressed like an Orthodox Choir but like an Afro-american Methodist-like choir. The chant sounded very much like Protestant chant and some were even moving. The choir was very good, but not really Eastern.

In other thing they showed a homilly (similar to those of the modern Roman Church) but it sounded a little bit like an evangelical preaching.

I know you don't believe me (I can't believe this too, I had never seen something like this in an Orthodox parish), I think it was a parish called "St George" in the USA (it was sure the USA).

Could that be a canonical orthodox parish????

I attend my lady's AME (African Methodist Episcopal) parish 2 to 3 times per month and what you describe is bizarre to me!

There is an African-American denomination, the "African Orthodox Church," which is African but has its roots in the Anglican Church, not Eastern Orthodoxy.

What you describe is a "puzzlement."

Well I don't think it was the Church you mentiones Ame, cause the appearence of the church and the liturgy was Eastern Orthodox, and the texts of the chants were Orthodox too, and there were no instruments (the liturgical vestments of the priests were Orthodox too) and I think it was a canonical parish because of the way it was presented, and I didn't see many afro-american people (i just mean that the chatnt sounded that way)

There is an African-American denomination, the "African Orthodox Church," which is African but has its roots in the Anglican Church, not Eastern Orthodoxy.

Actually it was a ‘Bishop’ named Alexander who started this movement. He was a former Catholic and this whole phenomenon has its roots in the Garvey movement.

It never had original connections with any Orthodox Church and all of its ideas were formed by reading books, it was more political than anything. It spread from America to South Africa, Uganda, Kenya (where it participated in the Mau Mau anti-colonial struggle) and other countries.

The Greeks have done excellent work in bringing a bulk of these Churches into a canonical Church with true sacraments and real Liturgy. Ethiopians have canonized some in South Africa and Copts in other areas in Africa. The ones that are still left untouched are those still right here in America.

Bishop Ware has a pretty accurate brief description in his book ‘The Orthodox Church.”

AFAIK Alexander was an ex-Episcopal minister, not a Catholic, and, yes, was a follower of Marcus Garvey.

Hey Serge,

What church affiliation are you?  I am Roman Catholic.  Your picture throws me everytime I see it, you kinda look
like Dr. Scott Hahn, heard of him?

I have but don't remember him having a beard. So I Googled and found:

I see what you mean but my beard is a little longer.

I think Patrick Madrid:

Okay Serge,

Well thanks for the comedy ... that gave me a laugh, I think the likeness is there, especially
with that pic of Scott Hahn you provided.  But yes your beard is longer.  Take care.

It could have been the Orthodox Parish of St John Coltrane :)  Yes, that DOES exist and is very vagante as you might imagine but hilarious!
For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like!-

Right, it could have been. That's the San Francisco congregation of the so-called 'African Orthodox Church' described above.

Here's the only image I could find of that group's "icon" of John Coltrane:
