Is the Greek St. James Liturgy "gaining" any popularity in the EO world? And does anyone know if this Liturgy is celebrated anywhere in America whenever it is allowed to be celebrated? I am interested in attending one in the NY area. I would prefer English, but will be interested in anything.

I wish it were more commonly used as well. As far as a lead goes...its my understanding that the Jerusalem Patriarchate still uses the St. James Liturgy most of the time. They have a monastery, Holy Cross, in East Setauket. Being a monastery and all, I imagine odds are good.

I know the OCA parish in San Anselmo and maybe even mine celebrate it on St. James's feast day - but that's on the West Coast.

Catholic Eagle I have one in my own Liturgical Library. Of the Order that we use in my own Parish. it's Rare. and my only copy.
For Mor Ephrem..
The James that we use was published in Saint Mark of Ephesus Monastery in Basking Ridge, NJ. It was a Translation from Slavonic.

Interesting...I have that very same translation in my possession right now (borrowed it from a friend and forum member). I hope to be able to visit the Cathedral that day and attend the Liturgy.

You highly overestimate these "CCD classes" we had to take. Going to church for any reason other than Sunday morning before ccd and Easter wasn't really mentioned. |

Mor,
I don't know of any in the NY area, but Holy Cross Seminary in Boston is doing the Liturgy as a mini-vigil (just the liturgy) at 9pm on Oct 22. (That's only a brief - ha - 4 hour drive from you)
Great Vespers will be celebrated earlier (5pm).
During other years, they have done the Liturgy at 6:30am (so one can be out by 8:30... the Liturgy easily takes 2 hours with all the explanations he does).

Interesting topic. About 25 years ago when I was working as a prison guard in Washington State there was what was announced as the "Catholic Mass" which I attended as a guard. It was in the dining hall of a maximum security cellhouse. Turns out it was a contract "priest" with an "english" name like Ellsworth who was serving the Liturgy of St James and wearing typical Greek style vestments. I later heard at my own parish that this priest, obviously a convert, was a state employee who belonged to no jurisdiction and tried to approach some local parishes. The liturgy was actually very well done but I was shocked to see all the inmates receiving Eucharist when I knew they were not of any particular religion and the same people I was guarding in their cells. Apparently he was contracted to serve the "catholic" services.
