35th Anniversary of the Repose Of Metropolitan Orestes

JOHNSTOWN PA -- Today, February 17, 2012, marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Falling Asleep in the Lord of His Eminence, Metropolitan Orestes (Chornock), of Thrice Blessed Memory.

Metropolitan Orestes, following the death of his beloved Pani Yolanda (Molchany) was consecrated as the first Bishop of our Diocese in 1938 by His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Benjamin.  His Eminence served as ruling bishop of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the U.S.A. from 1938-1977. 

May Almighty God Rest His Departed Servant, The Most Reverend Metropolitan Orestes in the Mansions of the Just.  May His Memory Be Eternal. Vichnaja Jemu Pamjat.

In Nov. of 1938, when the newly consecrated Bishop Orestes returned to New York harbor by steamship from Constantinople, he was greeted by hundreds of people at the pier who spontaneously broke out into this beloved melody. The Newark, New Jersey paper reported the next day that the new Bishop was disembarked to a rousing rendition of 'How Dry I Am' in Russian as he got off the boat.

As a young boy i had the privilege of getting to know the Metropolitan in his later years. He truly led an amazing life. Memory Eternal!
