Great Lent??
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:10:51 PM »
Has anyone read this? I just ordered a copy in preparation for lent.  It seems to have terrific reviews.
Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God's mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved.

Oh, yes. It is considered one of the standard works on the subject.

Im excited to read it.  It will be here Saturday.  I tried to find it in a bookstore in my area, but no one had a copy.  I hate ordering things online because I am very impatient! Ha!

I think you'll like it.  :) Also, if you can find a copy, you may enjoy "The Lenten Spring" by Fr. Thomas Hopko.

It is a seminal work. It is very accessible and it is organized in such a way that you can read it in short snippets rather than having to deal with long chapters.  Highly recommended.  My priest draws from it for his sermons during the Great Lenten season every year.  It helps to put so many things into perspective.

I wrote a more extensive review of it.  I don't know if I still have it, but PM me and if I find it, I'll email it to you.  No promises, though.

Ill definitely do that.  And that sounds like its my kind of book.  Im not a very avid reader, so I get discouraged when I see 50 page chapters. Ha!

A reader at my parish just bought this for me last Sunday.  Right now I'm digging into a few my priest wants me to read, but I intend to have finished it before Lent starts.

It is great for understanding liturgy in general within and without Lent. Highly recommended. Wished it was one of the first books I read about Orthodoxy. One of the few that were actually helpful.

It actually got to my house last night.  Thanks Amazon Prime!  The free 2 day shipping was more like a day and a half.  I only had time to read the intro, but I can tell im going to like it.  And I definitely like how its divided up into smaller sections!

Assuming this is the book written by Fr. Alexander Schmemann, I just started it a week ago. It's quite enjoyable. I'd love to start a discussion group for it now that Great Lent is nearly upon us.

Wow! I just got it FREE from Amazon on my new Kindle.  :)  Very cool.

Okay. Either I'm tired or...something. I saw the title and what forum it was in and actually thought it was going to be a review of Great Lent. That actual Great Lent, not the book. I'm just tired. I'm sure that's what it is and I'm not crazy at all.
