I have, for a few years, had a desire to learn Modern Greek. I'm wondering what tools, books, sources, software, etc. are best, in the opinions of those who have learned it, preferably from those who learned it outside the context of a university course (though, of course, I'd appreciate your opinions as well).

I have used Teach Yourself Beginner's Modern Greek and can say "I'm waiting for two friends from London" pefectly.  Learning on your own needs a heap of motivation. I learned German some years ago through a correspondence course and found that fruitful enough to sit exams at the local high school. So if such a course in Modern Greek is available I would recommend it. |

It's a pretty good course and not one to casually start. The rate of instruction is robust. |

For conversational Greek, yes, ignoring the $450 or thereabouts cost. |

In addition to the lessons at the Kypros site, I would also recommend the DLI or FSI course. I am currently using the DLI course along with Kypros.net's course.

Id say for you guys to try language perfect as it worked wonders for my friends who wanted to learn greek, or babylon but i think its just a dictionary. Hope I Could Help  |

You are right about the Septuagint. The language of the NT is much easier to grasp (with the exception of a couple of Paul's epistles) if you only speak Modern Greek |
