I am on a new Computer (Powerbook G4) and am having trouble using a Greek Font. The odd part is that in some applications it works fine - like here +£-Ç++-ü-Ä +++¦ +¦-ü+¼-å-ë -â-ä+¦ +ò+++++++++¦+¦+¼. But in work for example it won't let me use a greek font. Any Suggestions?
+ò-à -ç+¦-ü+¦-â-ä-Ä!

Well, that's because you switched to Mac. Had you used Windows, you would just select the Greek Polytonic Keyboard and voila Seriously though, maybe someone who knows about Macs can explain how on a Mac you add a keyboard? On Windows you no longer install foreign language fonts, but rather there are several Unicode fonts. So you just install a keyboard for whatever language you want and it automatically selects the unicode font that has the characters you need. How does it work with Mac? Anastasios

I think therefore iMac FWIW I'm using OS 10.3 which I believe supports unicode fonts.... Other than this little thing I love my little Mac - far far better than Micro$oft!!!

I noticed a trend with Greek on my computer, like I can use it here in Safari (+ò+++++++++¦+¦+¼!) and MS office is the only application that I can't use Greek - so the problem is microsoft NOT apple! Does anyone that is familar with MS Word know how I change the settings to allow Greek fonts? I can write in Russian and Spanish in Word so I am confused...
So for now it's Appleworks over word.

I'll have a look at how you enable the polytonic keyboards when I get to work tomorrow. I'm not sure the support is that great though. Up till MacOS 9 it was no problem but MacOS X is BSD Unix based.

OS X isn't the issue (I don't think) since I can use Greek in some places. (+¦+¦-Ä +++¦++-ü-Ä +++¦ +¦-ü+¼-å-ë -â-ä+¦ +ò+++++++++¦+¦+¼ +¦+++++¼ -î-ç+¦ -â-ä++ MS Word +« AppleWorks - +¦+¦++ +++¡-ü-ë +¦+¦+¦-ä+»)

Too bad you can't spell yet It may be an issue with fonts as I suspect the majority that ship with the Mac do not have Greek, let alone Polytonic Greek (the beast I just had a look at does not appear to have any Polytonic Greek fonts). I noticed that almost everytime I changed font in Word, it automagically changed the keyboard to USA english, perhaps because the font did not have Greek charaters? Me, I'm still trying to figure out support for polytonic Greek under LINUX, so MacOS X is a ways off for me yet, and I am the Mac support guy here (actually I am the everything plugged into the wall socket support guy) Sorry I'm not much help. John.

I decided to put Windows XP (via virtual PC) on my computer, and I can use Polytonic Greek with word there...(I still can't use even Demetic Greek on Word for Mac...there must be a way though since I have the fonts and can read webpages written in them). So for now that works, but it is a little weird running windows on an Apple computer!

+¥+¦+¦-ä+¼-ü+¦+¦! Good news! We now have polytonic Greek support on our Mac with MacOS X. I'll try to send it to you next week some time, followed by maybe a font a day so I don't clog up your email.
John.

Thanks! Demetri, I couldn't get that font that was on that page to type in Greek at all.... Maybe it is just user error.
Hopefully with John's help my mac will be Hellenized :-)

I hope it John's solution works for you as well. Unicode is nice, but a pain. Maybe John will figure Greek out on Linux too.

At least I can post stuff in unicode from Opera on this forum. Pretty much every other forum I'm on breaks (changes the text into cr@p) unless I post from Internet Explorer Oh, my...I was just going to switch to Mozilla Firefox which I'm running on a test 'puter. It rocks. The new release Mozilla Suite is very buggy in it Mail.

Demetri,
Even though unicode is "universal" you still have to have support installed on your computer for those sections of the unicode that pertain to an individual language--usually. It's still kind of finicky in my opinion.

Evidently you edited something as I can make out the scripts now. Too bad I can't read them Is that Geogian, Armenian or ? on the fourth line? Actually, what scripts are you showing? Demetri

OK, I'm impressed. Thanks. A couple weeks ago I found a Georgian keyboard & font untility for Windows. Installed it too. Why? I don't know - no online Georgian tutors that I can find. Symptomatic of too much 'puter time, I guess.
You didn't change anything!? Only difference between this computer and the one that doesn't show all scripts is that this has Office2000 and other one (which won't fully show scripts) has StarOffice.

Just to make things confusing I can see the polytonic Greek fonts online (even the unicode ones!) using safari, it just that it won't let me use any Greek font in either Word nor Appleworks.... if it comes down to it I can just put the windows version of Office on here and use that, windows XP amaszingly enough isn't all that slow on my powerbook. Still OS X is a million times better

Problem solved for me! I downloaded the trial for Office 2004 for mac and my Greek fonts work perfectly there. My problem was that Office.x did NOT support unicode fonts...now that just means more softwear to buy :-/
