Catholic & Coptic Orthodox leaders launch historic book

The Catholic Archbishop of Southwark,  Most Rev Kevin McDonald and the Coptic Orthodox Bishop Angaelos marked the Week of Christian Unity today, with the launch of the first book compiled by the Catholic-Oriental Orthodox Regional Forum: 'Joint Statements between the Catholic and Oriental Orthodox Churches'.

"It's very easy to become theoretical about theology and forget that we are talking about our faith in the incarnate Word, in salvation and in the presence of God. We forget to speak in communion of what we can have in common."

"These differences will be resolved because Christ makes one promise about one flock and one shepherd and we will be unified one day," said Bishop Angaelos."We have a lot in common, which far outweighs our differences.

Ah! I love this proverb we have in the east, the bedouins give it to us: "Me against my brother; my brother and I against my cousin; Me, my brother, and my cousin against the stranger". you know what I mean?  Wink

May the Lord make it a fruitful cooperation for the benefit of the Christian World that must stand together based on what truly unites us against what is commonly in enmity with us. As there is a time for everything!  Smiley

If they "far outweigh our differences," we would be in communinon.

But the Arab proverb is applicable.  If not brothers, the Vatican is certainly a cousin against the strange new doctrines of this age.

We have to start somewhere. I look at the Christian divisions in the Middle East and grieve. How can we ask the scales be removed from the eyes of our Muslim brothers while continuing to have such emnity between our own communities.

The thread title is wrong. It is a publication issued by the Catholic-Oriental Orthodox Regional Forum of which I am co-Secretary, and its membership consists of bishops and representative clergy from all the Oriental Orthodox communion.

I had the job of producing the book, and was pleased to see how much serious agreement had been reached on many things.

The C-OORF is an ecumenical body that I don't mind giving up time to, as the Catholic members are very pleasant and interesting partners, and it is possible to be entirely honest about both the things that unite us and the things that still divide us.

Thank you for the correction, Father Peter.  I hope this effort bears good fruit.
