Sub-Deacon
« on: January 12, 2012, 07:08:47 PM »
What is a Sub-Deacon?  What sort of duties would a Sub-Deacon perform as apposed to a Deacon? Are they vested? Are they ordained?

Subdeacons (or ipodeacons) are tonsured (like readers), not ordained. They generally assist in hierarchical services and AFAIK do not have some special duties when services are celebrated without a bishop. They are vested in sticharion and orarion (however orarion is put on differently to the deacon's).

Why do posters that claim to have me blocked keep sending me pms and responding to my posts? That makes no sense.

I read somewhere that the Orthodox are beginning to allow female Sub-Deacon's?

Generally women could be ordained as a deacon(ess) until XV century or something but such things are very controversial and (almost) unpracticed now.

So a deaconess WOULD be Ordained then?   What sort of practices for them would that entail?

They took part in baptisms and chrismations of female converts. It is uncertain what (if any) liturgical roles they had.
