It was another joyous Epiphany in Tarpon Springs, Florida. This morning, large crowds attended the annual cross dive at the Spring Bayou. They also got to see something especially rare: more than one cross had to be used.

From the article:
Quote
Officials announced Thursday afternoon that three young men actually received blessings, because the second cross thrown apparently came out of the water in the hands of two retrievers.

After none of the 61 young men in the water were able to initially find the first cross thrown by Archbishop Demetrios Trakatellis, leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, he threw a second cross.

The young men were searching for roughly seven minutes before the archbishop tossed the second cross into the water.

61 young men, eh? Wow, we only had two, myself included... the other guy (a kid) got the cross which was attached to a string since last year it almost got lost in the river. And no, I was not about to shove the kid out of the way just to get a blessing.

Why is it only guys who jump in the water to retrieve the Cross?

Is it forbidden to girls, or are they just to smart to do it?  angel

They probably don't want women in bikinis hanging out on the pier.

I was going to have my daughter do it last year but the water in the northeast is to frigid.

Excellence of character, then, is a state concerned with choice, lying in a mean relative to us, this being determined by reason and in the way in which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on defect.

I've heard they allow girls to be swimmers in some places. It depends on the church.

A notable fact is that at St. Nicholas, where the pictures were taken, only a girl is allowed to be the releaser of the dove- a bird is set free to remind us of the Holy Spirit at the Baptism of the Lord.  angel So, the young women do have a role at the event.
