"Now the Lovech Bishop says that the Synod is only against surrogacy, and sees is it as unacceptable, while both the Greek and the Russian Orthodox Churches agree with in vitro fertilization under the condition that biological material is from the lawful husband. Other conditions include implanting all fertilized eggs and no eggs being destroyed."

I am pleased to see this because this is precisely how it was explained by my bishop when a couple asked about this difficult question.

Only one egg was fertilised.  No fertilised eggs were destroyed.   We were all grateful to God that this fertilised egg was successful and is now a beautiful and very much loved 3 year old girl.

The bio-ethical issue of in-vitro fertilization is on the minds of many Orthodox Christians. It is sad that the news reporter used the document only for slanted biased reporting. It is also sad that great PR is mostly missing from the Orthodox World. Do yourself a favor and translate the document the Holy Synod released. Do not bother reading the news report.

It is clear that the Orthodox understanding of marriage encourages unconditional love, obedience and sebeotdaynostta which necessarily include the humble acceptance of infertility of one or both spouses so that it does not become a threat to the integrity, unity and happiness of the family.

Therefore, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church under extreme indulgence may allow "in vitro" / "in vivo" fertilization, which used biological material belonging only to the spouses for the creation of embryos, each of which is implanted in the wife without destroying any of them as they are worn only by his wife. Thus, the integrity, unity and harmony in the family significantly level would be maintained.
