Merry Christmas! (since today, Jan 8, is actually the Feast of the Nativity in the Coptic Church this year, not yesterday... although all the churches celebrated on both days to avoid confusing people, repeating the readings each day)...

yes, there is a leap year this year in both the gregorian and coptic calendars, but the leap year's extra days are in september (coptic) and february (gregorian), so during the months in between we are out of synch. so we celebrated on the old julian calendar saturday 7th jan (and friday evening as well!) and then we celebrated today on 29th kiahk, which usually falls on 7th jan, but this year is on 8th jan. we have had Christmas continually all weekend! and i went to a priestly ordination today for the first time, which was a big blessing. gotta go now and get some sleep; have found out it is actually possible to celebrate so much i am sleeeeeeepy... edit: david i, is that icon copyright? can u send me details if it is, coz i just copied it

Since Armenians celebrate Christmas on January 6, those Armenians who are on the old calendar are getting ready to celebrate it now on January 19: While most have already finished celebrating Christmas, the Armenian Orthodox Church in Israel is just getting started.
Whoever said that Christmas only comes once a year obviously doesn’t live in Jerusalem. Thanks to a glut of Christian denominations confined in one small geographical space, Christmas comes three times in the Holy Land – more here than anywhere else in the world. http://theorthodoxchurch.info/blog/news/2012/01/third-time-lucky/It was discussed a couple of years ago here: http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,25538.0.html

I've always heard Jan. 19. But I guess we could have a really old calendar, and then it would be the 26th.

No. They celebrate on January 19th. I was in Bethlehem for Armenian Christmas over the 18th/19th two years ago. I think it ended up being like 9 hours of services, and we left early to make sure we could get through the wall and back into Jerusalem. And barely did at that.
