Note how the only individual they care to provide statements of is the Ecumenical Patriarch.  I wonder whether or not the reason is that they can find no other reputable Orthodox who care excessively about environmentalism, or if they foolishly believe he is our Pope.

Green Pope says that Orthodox value freedom in religion, like in Greece where proselytism is legal!

It provides a link to over 200 of his All-Holiness' statements on the environment.  I do not think they are worried about excess.

I'm in the middle of reading a book by Elizabeth Theokritoff called Living in God's Creation: Orthodox Perspectives on Ecology (SVS Foundations Series, 2009) which is shaping up to be a well-rounded perspective on this topic.

Dear Clare,

When you are done, please share your thoughts.  I think it is an intelligent book by a sincere Orthodox Christian.

Am just in the middle of reading that same book just now. Would you care to share your thoughts on it?

For those interested, there is also Seraphim (Bruce) Foltz article, "Discerning the Spirit in Creation: Orthodox Christianity and Environmentalism1", at the Vatopaidi Monastery blog:
http://vatopaidi.wordpress.com/2009/10/13/discerning-the-spirit-in-creation-orthodox-christianity-and-environmentalism1/

It is too long for me to read in its entirety online and I do not have a printer available at this time.

I think the sense that the emphasis on God's creation as "good" shows a living relationship with the individual and the natural world in Orthodoxy. Yes, creation is fallen but not totally depraved & we can love God & see an aspect of this love in His creation. My statement is very broad & I am not inferring western Christians lack any of this but in some cases, a severity towards the natural world exists in some areas.

+1! This was Adam's mission when he was reated in Eden. Naming the animals was one part of his responsibility. Why should we not follow his lead?

Don't use plastic bottles for Holy Water or at least make sure they are BPA free.
