'St. Augustine Pray for Me'

« on: December 08, 2011, 11:31:38 PM »

I am going to be Baptised within a few months and I was searching for an icon of my patron, St. Augustine of Hippo, and all I could find was this http://www.monasteryicons.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=DETAIL&item=703&EXPANDED=1 I was just wondering if this is canonical and good or if I should hold off. I do not know enough yet about what makes something an icon and what doesn't. So some advice would be helpful.

Here ya go:

I would avoid the "Monastery Icons" group if possible. They have described themselves as Gnostics and are not Orthodox at all.

Advice on Monastery Icons seconded. And their work looks like it was churned out using a graphics program, not painted with prayer and fasting. Their work lacks warmth and dignity, it just looks fake, soulless and plastic.

Thanks for the link and advice. But are you sure that is Augustine of Hippo? I think the icon you linked me is Augustine of Canterbury, but, I cannot tell. I am looking for Augustine of Hippo.

The icon Iconodule linked to is of the correct saint. St Augustine of Canterbury is usually shown with hair and beard that is less curly.

If you are looking for a good book on Iconography, I would recommend "Iconostasis" by Pavel Florensky.

I'm not an expert, but I think this icon is OK. I also found some nice icons of Blessed Augustine at this link:

I was told not to buy any Icons before my Chrismation as my sponsor would buy my Patron St and my cross and others would gift me with other items and or Icons.  I received a beautiful handpainted icon of my Patron Saint and one of the Holy Theotokos and my cross from my sponsor.
