If you have a gift in a certain area or ability it might be good to use it and develop it. For instance, if you are good with mechanical things, or theology, or baking, or whatever else, you can use these skills in a way that is pleasing to God.  As for whether God "has a plan for each of us," I suppose so, but only in a rather vague way insofar as he made us with certain abilities. As for actually being called to specific tasks or occupations or ministries, I think that is much more rare.

Pray and ask Him and then go about with your life.  He will for sure guide you to where He wants you to be.  Keep praying that you may be sensitive to His will and recognize it.

Do you live your life in preparation for burial and entrance into the Afterlife?

Not enough. There is that saying: "keep your mind in hell, and despair not". My version (unfortunately) would be more along the lines of: "your soul is in limbo, and you aren't trying hard enough"   :-[

'My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.'

The Lord wants your heart for His dwelling, and that you keep His commandments. Apart from this, you are free (!) to pursue what seems most fitting to you, I suppose. But maybe there is a context I am missing?

What does the Lord want me to do?...

A priest once told me to focus on doing the next right thing. That's difficult enough, IMHO.

Am I supposed to have a specific task?...

Two things come to mind. One is the parable of the talents where we are commanded to use the resources given to us, which would include trying to develop and use any natural abilities that God has given you. The other thing is parables like the rich man and Lazarus and the good Samaritan, which means being open to recognizing opportunities as they come up like the rich man failed to do with Lazarus and acting on those opportunities like the Samaritan did. In the case of the rich man, he was faced with something he came into contact with on a daily basis, and in the case of the Samaritan, it was something that he may not have been presented with on a daily basis.

Just a few thoughts.
And FWIW, these are our Fathers too, you know.
