My pastor asked me on Friday if I was ready. On Saturday, I made my life confession after vespers. So today, I was chrismated. More than just joy, I feel relieved, since I have been spiritually homeless ever since I really started to read the Early Church Fathers.

Praise God for his mercy on me, a sinner.

Thanks for all your replies.

Today I celebrated my patron saint day--Clement of Rome (old calendar)--for the first time. My wife gave me an icon of Christ for our room. I think the tradition of taking a new name is a great one, since we are truly "born again" and "new creatures" in Christ (2 Cor 5:17). The new name reminds us of that, doesn't it?

Many Years and Congrats.

I did my best to do a general or life confession and the Priest kept asking "are you sorry for your sins?" Wait Father Im not done! No I hardly got everything. I really tried though.  The ceremony was very nice but quick and no real oaths taken. I thought Id have to renounce all my western 'heretical' beliefs. I didnt. I was ambivalent about the whole thing.

Lord have mercy.

My Chrismation was relatively short as well, but my confession was long and I personally confessed all my previous Protestant errors and heresies, one by one, for they were legion. So I think my priest felt it wasn't necessary to renounce them again in the Chrismation.

If you didn't get to do it, you could bring it up in confession again.

Thanks to all of you.

My journey has been unexpected and unintended. I was a happy Evangelical Anglican and would still be as such except for my reading of the Fathers. I met a wonderful girl who is a Roman Catholic and a member of Opus Dei. We fell in love and got married, both convinced that if we would focus on Christ, all else would fall in place.

During the first years of our 8 year marriage, I thought that I would show my Roman Catholic wife how my low Evangelical church was very much like the Early Church before it became "confused". So, I immersed myself in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. And sure enough, I didn't find evidence for Papal infallibility, Purgatory, the Immaculate Conception, transubstantiation, the treasury of merit or a number of other RC dogma. But, actually, I found even less evidence for my own church. The Early Church was sacramental, hierarchical, and liturgical, dating from the first century. Through reading the history and writings of the first Christians, I ceased to be Protestant. I also became spiritually homeless--a rather depressing state.

Fortunately, God is sovereign and has led me to Orthodoxy, which I think is anchored in the Truth as revealed in Scripture, in the Fathers and in the Councils.  The mind of the Church leads us ineluctably to Orthodoxy. I know the journey doesn't end here, but I am glad to be in this ark.

Hey, that is a huge step.

I know some members of the Opus Dei, and they will not ever enter an Orthodox Church.
