After several years of difficult discernment, my wife and I have decided to convert to Orthodoxy. We've already met with the priest. I'm honestly filled with joy at how easy the decision was in the end. The road ahead wil certainly have its challenges as a big part of my identity has been being Catholic, but I'm ready for it.

A well educated Catholic will become a well educated Orthodox quite quickly.  Catholicism provides a good base.

You'll miss some things from your Catholic life, liturgical things, some hymns, music, feastdays, etc.  But as the years go by new associations and connections grow with Orthodox customs and prayers and music and they begin to resonate within you as the old Catholic things once did. They'll become part of your identity.

There's no need to change it unless you are so inclined. No Orthodox requirement for that.

Congratulations!  Many years!

I can't remember, are you in Detroit?  Have you been to Holy Incarnation, if you have not picked a parish yet?

The decision may have been easy, but the road will be fraught with difficulties. And those difficulties may well present themselves after you have joined yourselves to the Church.  I say this not to discourage you or your wife, but to remind you that "to whom much is given, much is required" and even sacrificed.  Best of luck to both of you and many years.

I wanted to thank EVERYONE. The past few years have been very difficult for me while trying to discern God's will for me. Everyone on this board has been tremendously kind and helpful--Orthodox and Catholics alike.

I'm so happy and content with my decision now that I know it's the Holy Spirit who has lead me, through all of you, that has helped me come to this decision. I feel so very blessed and thankful.

Thank you all.

Congratulations!

I converted from the Latin Catholic and it was indeed a good base.
Prior to that I had spent some 15 years as a Baptist!
I feel like the fulness of all the faiths is in Eastern Orthodoxy, and the worship experience Is just incomparable.

I am sure you feel the same, may your faith and excitement continue to grow.
Many years!

Well, the fun has begun. Now that word has gotten out, I'm finding myself having to defend my decision to a slew of people. It turns out there's quite a few closet Catholic apologists out there.

The toughest thing for me to deal with is the assumption by some who hardly know me that I haven't prayed or thought this HUGE decission through. Part of me wants to just tell them off, but so far I haven't. Smiley

Prayers are welcomed.

Remember, this is an opportune time for demons to seek to tempt and ensnare you if they can, ignore them and hold fast to the truth that has been delivered to you!

Thank you, ortho_cat,
I fear you are right. I hadn't considered it before. I need to pray extra hard before my responses to everyone.

Sparrow! Good for you brother. May the Lord guide and protect you both on your journey and may your home be filled with Grace! +++

Thank you. Despite the uncomfortable dialogs my wife and I have had to have with our Catholic friends, my house feels very blessed. My kids are as happy about this decision as we are.

Thank you for your support.

Catholic Answers got wind of my conversion many years ago, so I got calls from two of their evangelists. I found out later that it was the Opus Dei folks who called CA. Gotta love them. Smiley

My son led us to Orthodoxy.

Wow. Thats something I do not want to happen to us. I don't mind answering questions for regular Catholics. I don't want to debate someone like Jimmy Akin. :0
