I ran across this church's website, "St. John Coltrane Church' in San Francisco, California, and although they use the name African Orthodox, they don't appear to be part of a mainstream Orthodox jurisdiction. I was wondering what others had heard. Reminds me, also, of this site- if it's not already on their list of extraneous churches, it seems like it deserves to be.

The actual African contingent of the African Orthodox Church has been absorbed into canonical Orthodoxy.

I guess it is supposed to be Ioannis - which I think might be the Greek form of "John"?

Maybe it's the painter's interpretation of what the name should be and how it should be spelled.  How can you judge, as you've never gotten to know the patron of the piece?

Splendid! When/where do I collect?
Of course, you are owed far more than a cigar for your contribution towards keeping iconography on the right path.
Sure beats my "Nuh uh, that's NOT correct iconography!!!  Angry" style of posting.

I tried.  The dismay we could've shared in person, what with these kids today and their bogus "icons" would've been worth the meetup.  Alas, it was not to be.
