Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

« on: November 21, 2011, 02:26:33 AM »

Igumen Seraphim (Voepel) of the Hermitage of the Holy Cross (ROCOR, Wayne, WV) has been in declining health. Particularly recently, as it was discovered that something was wrong with his kidneys. I have recently heard from Bishop George (Schaefer), Abbot at Holy Cross, that Fr. Seraphim has been diagnosed with kidney cancer.

Please keep Fr. Seraphim in your prayers. I know there are several of us here who love the monastery and frequently visit, so I will gladly update this thread as I learn more.

It is difficult to accept.  St. Panteleimon, intercede for our Father Seraphim.

I do not know what is happening.  Friday, my wife's coworker discovered that she had aggressive Liver Cancer.  The next day, I discovered that a woman that I am working with as a Catechumen has Breast Cancer.  And today, I find on this forum that my Godfather has Kidney Cancer.  May God have mercy on all of them.  He knows what is best.  I pray that He enlighten us so that we may understand, too.

A woman from our church just returned from the monastery today and said Fr. Seraphim came home yesterday and the brotherhood is glad to have him back. No word on when his surgery will be.

Thank you for the update. Do you know if they're planning on holding an Unction service, and if so when? I would like to attend, if possible.

I'll be seeing my priest tomorrow, so I will ask him the same thing (Fr. Seraphim is my priest's confessor) and post what I find out here.

I don't know about that, but I received an update from Fr. Alexander, via my pariah priest:
Quote
Dear All,

Many of you know that they discovered a tumor on Igumen Seraphim's kidney, and I want to give you an update. He spent several nights in the hospital and underwent several tests, including scans of his chest, neck etc., and his bones. Both came back clear, so the good news is that the cancer has not spread. He came home last night, as they want the inflammation in his kidney to go down before they perform surgery. His urologist will see him next Tuesday to check his progress and make a plan to remove the tumor, and part or all of his right kidney. Thank you for your prayers. He is very grateful to those of you who visited him, prayed with him, and called regarding his health. He looks good, is moving around quite a bit, came to church tonight for part of the service to St. Nektarios, and I believe he will be just fine. As you know we have a very good doctor here in St. Panteleimon, and he has several good doctors caring for him in Drs. Hudak, Life, and Morabito.

With love in Christ,
Fr. Alexander

My prayers are with him and the brotherhood. Fr. Seraphim is a very inspiring man to me and has helped me tremendously. I know he has greatly impacted others as well. Perhaps if one of us can find a canon or akathist to St. Panteleimon, we could try to pray it over the next several days. He is also very much dedicated to the Theotokos. May she intercede for him and all of us.

In Christ,
Andrew

Lord have mercy!  St. Nektarios pray for Fr. Seraphim!

Along with prayers to St. Panteleimon, please ask also for the intercession of St. Nektarios who is known specifically for his help to those with cancer.  Just a few weeks ago I was also found to have a cancerous tumor, and it just so happened that the surgery to remove it was scheduled for the feast of St. Nektarios on the New Calendar (Nov 9).  The night before surgery I was able to celebrate Vespers at the nearby Greek Church dedicated to St. Nektarios, venerated his relics, and received anointing from the lampada that burns before his relics.  Thank God, in my case the surgery went well, the cancerous tumor was removed, and it did not spread.  Now I just need a little radiation to make sure everything is taken care of, and all should be well.  May our merciful God, through the intercession of Sts. Panteleimon and Nektarios, also grant good results and a speedy recovery to Fr. Seraphim!

Yesterday evening and this morning we were blessed with a visit from Fr. Jeremiah and Matushka Margaret Davis, as they have relatives that live not too far from our parish that they visited for the holiday. Fr. Jeremiah essentially confirmed the information given above attributed to Fr. Alexander. He did add a few little bits of information: the cancer itself has not been "staged" yet, so they do not yet know what stage Fr. Seraphim is in with his cancer, but it is a form of cancer known to be very resistant to chemo and radiation, so that surgery is really the best option and that if it were to spread, it would be very dangerous. He informed our parish that plans are moving forward to remove large parts or even possibly the entirety of Fr. Seraphim's right kidney, though a specific date is not yet known.

There is also now a new and growing Facebook group "Pray for Igumen Seraphim." The group is closed, but I would ask folks to request to join. The group can be found here.
