Sixteen people are dead and fifty more injured after a stampede at a religious festival in India. The crowd rushed forward to make offerings at a fire, but there was insufficient room for the large numbers, and chaos soon followed.

From the article:
Quote
Thousands have been attending the ceremony for Sri Ram Sharma, who founded the Gayatri Parivar sect.

Reports said the number of casualties could rise. Television footage showed injured people being taken to hospital.
