What are they?

I think Wikipedia puts it a lot better than I can:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_International

Basically it's a group (club) of business people that 'rotate' in doing service for the community, hence the name 'Rotary'.

Are the Orthodox allowed to participate in it?

I don't see why not - but honestly, I don't know much more about than asking my husband who is affiliated with a lot of the clubs in the area.  I don't think creed plays a factor. . . but I'll ask him to make sure.

Not that I'm aware of.  . . they are more along the lines of the Lion' Club.  I donMt think they are affiliated with any religion.

As others have said, the Rotary Club is a group of business owners within a community that come together to serve the community. They are not a secret organization, their meetings are open, and they don't have any secret handshakes. They are not affiliated with any religious organization. It's just a group of business owners coming together to help others. Smiley

My boyfriend was able to go to Japan for six months as an exchange student while in High School, due to a Rotary Club scholarship.
