Norton Antivirus Overlap
« on: August 04, 2004, 11:46:23 AM »
Cap'n,

Thanks for the guarantee!

I renewed my subscription to Norton Antivirus because, in trying to reinstall my prior version after having my computer wiped (this was before the expiration date), errors kept coming up, installation wouldn't finish, etc.

After renewing, installation seemed to go smoothly...the only problem is that now, everytime I start up Windows, it tells me that NAV can't start up the Email protection aspect of it...which was active in the prior version of NAV but not in this one!  I fear I may have either a prior or (probably) an absent program trying to run instead of the current program, which should be active.

Should I be worried?  What can I do to stop the error message?

Thanks,

Pedro

Tell me what version of NAV you have.

2004 now.  I think the prior one was 2002.

First things first.

1) Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel
2) Go to "Add/Remove Programs"
3) Check how many instances of Symantec Norton Anti Virus are installed.  Hopefully just the 2004.  If a 2002 and a 2004 are listed, you will need to uninstall both and reinstall 2004.
4) If 2004 is the only one listed, double-click the Norton icon, go to OPTIONS under Internet, and click the email submenu.  Verify the boxes are checked.

Another question...do you have ZoneAlarm? This can cause problems with initializing the email scanner.

Let me know.

OK -- 2004's the only one showing up, but I do also have LiveReg and LiveUpdate 1.90 from Semantec; could they be contributing to this?  The boxes for scanning incoming and outgoing mail, plus the ones for enabling worm blocking and alerting when scanning emails are all checked.  Are they supposed to be unchecked?

No.

(An edit a few days later)

Just so you know, the message reads that the file for the Email protection is either "corrupt or missing," so the aspect can't start up.
