Last Thursday our male dog severely/seriously injured our son in a completely unprovoked attack/bite. This required 6 stitches, and if it had been 1/2 inch over her would have lost his eye. We surrendered our dog last Friday because we didn't feel it was safe to keep him in our home, or chance him in another home. Our children are very sad and miss the dog, but we are certain that we did the right thing. Our elder dog Tasha is very depressed and missing Boris. She is near the end of her life and misses the animal to animal companionship. We used to have a cat before we got Boris. Boris was not kind to the cat (and I needed the dog for home security while my husband was deployed) so we gave the cat away. We know that Tasha enjoys cats (and dogs) for companionship, and have decided that we should look into getting another pet sooner rather than later.
Our local humane society is offering a "Free adoption weekend" this Fri-Sun. Friday morning my husband and I intend to look at the cats (without the children present) and try to find a bonded pair of young cats. Normally getting two cats would cost about $200, so the fact that the adoption fees are waived helps us a great deal. There are a pair of purebred British shorthair young cats online that look to be perfect for our situation, but purebred animals go quickly. We intend to look at all the cats and find a bonded pair, but these kittens have really captured my interest/attention. If we don't find a good match we plan to wait to get some cats in the future. But it would be wonderful to find them this weekend when it won't cost us $200+.
