Most non-underground Christian artists have become sellouts, much like any popular artist. I heard Plumb's latest song and I am tres disappointed. It's so trite. She is much better than that.
Haven't listened to Rebecca St. James's new album, though, but I love her more out of nostalgia (she was my first favorite CCM artist -- Christian lyrics and techno-ish background music, loved the combination!).
I love how she published a book about men when she just got married. Don't get me started on that. I rolled my eyes when I heard about that. Sometimes people will do anything to make money. She should have sat on that project for a couple of years.

1) The Book of Revelation. I was never a literalist, but I still think it is a beautiful book and wish it was part of the Eastern tradition. How I would love to hear, "The reading is from the Revelation of St John" in the liturgy. 2) Advent, and all the Christmas hymns like Hark! The Herald Angels Sing — which describes the Incarnation in a rather Orthodox way (and congregational singing) 3) The hymns, such as It is Well With My Soul, which moves me to tears every time, guaranteed. "O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight..." 4) Again, pipe organs. But this is mostly aesthetics, that I really could find in the Western Rite, were I so inclined (and if it was available where I am). I would not trade anything else, even the hard things like fasting and confession, because it has all been so beneficial to me.

lol. sorry to hear that. you must have come from an exceptionally pious protestant church, because all the ones i grew up in people would talk (and sometimes sleep) during church. I wouldn't say that i've noticed this problem at my parish.

To add on that, I love the Orthodox, but 45% of my church comes in very late. It's kind of annoying to hear them bustle about during the Epiclesis.

The introduction to the article "Epiclesis", Orthodoxwiki: In the Epiclesis (or epiklesis), God's Holy Spirit is called on to come down "upon us and upon these gifts" (the bread and wine), so that they may become "truly the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" . A distinction is usually made between the invocation over the people (called a 'communion' epiclesis) and the one over the Gifts of bread and wine (called a 'consecratory' epiclesis). This is the main supplication in the Eucharistic Prayer.

Anaphora? Do I need to brush up on my Orthodox Liturgy terms? I obviously do. It's during the whole ritual where the bread and wine are consecrated. EDIT: Yeah, the Epiclesis is one part of it, but I meant to talk about the Anaphora in general.

I asked Mr. Ismi about this last night, and besides the music industry (underground stuff, not CCM), he said that if he was single, girls would be the first on his list. He noticed how everyone at our current church was either 15 or married. Well, isn't he lucky?!

Singing!
Don't get me wrong - I love Orthodox hymnody and I love singing it, but when I was growing up, Lutherans were called "the singing church." I miss hearing the "Lutheran Fight Song," otherwise known as "A Mighty Fortress." To hear a sizable Lutheran congregation belting that out on Reformation Sunday was something, you betcha!
Also, I miss Sacred Harp singing.
I know what you mean. When I was a kid and we first started attending the Baptist Church with my mother, they used to sing the old beautiful hymns, and I really liked it. (Eventually they moved on to the praise & worship garbage that's popular today.) Also, the entire congregation would sing. (Although Orthodox doctrine states everyone in the parish should sing, let's face it, in most parishes this is not the case.) There is a Lutheran Church in my town, and at 9:00 AM, 12 Noon, and 6 PM every day, they play an entire hymn on their Church bells for all to hear. It's really lovely, and I often find myself singing along if I know the hymn. (They change it from day to day.) I think also as an American born person who studied Western music for a large portion of her life, I just thoroughly enjoy Western compositions, and sometimes struggle with the "tones" of Orthodoxy. I don't find them as easy on the ear all the times. While there are many Orthodox hymns I love, some are a little tougher to sing than others.

Do you miss the doughnuts? Come back to the dark side, we have doughnuts *chuckles* We have doughnuts, cake, bread, rolls, quick breads, and sandwiches at a typical coffee hour. Oh, and don't be surprised if vodka or wine are present either. The Baptist Church my mother used to take us to had zip. Congregating with your fellow Christian after service was to be done on your dime at another location. Can't be having you take up parking space for the people coming in for the next three services. (Heaven forbid!) (I had a Hybrid upbringing of Orthodox and Baptist.)

The ONLY thing that I miss is knowing the right words for everything. Liturgy has a language (or two...or three...or...) all its own. It can get very confusing!! But, I'll take the multiple language struggle over the multiple choice theologies and doctrines of the protestant world any day of the week and twice on Tuesday.

Good man! Speaking of, I need to get meself to one of these uber-mega-churches... I hate the idea of an uber-mega-church. They are NOT where I belong atm. I would be miserable. Hymns, the ones that my old Lutheran church used to play, without catering to the "contemporary" music crowd, that most Protestant churches no longer sing.

I also enjoyed approaching the Bible with the idea that I may discover some new and novel interpretation that everyone else had missed all these centuries. I did not know that people really did that. Okay, duh! The fasting whenever you wanted to, and whatever you wanted to.
Fasting has its great points, but as an inveterate meat lover, I'm not going to act like I don't sulk at all on Wed/Fridays. I miss being a Catholic and being able to eat cheese, eggs, and fish! Haha.
I love your honesty.

I miss doing whatever I please, not going to Church, indulging every desire, never confessing my sins to anyone, believing whatever I wanted, and yet still being able to claim that "I am saved" and "going to heaven" when I die. Yet, when I really think about it, since I could never really believe in Protestantism, and since self-indulgence lead only to a foretaste of Hell, and since the "I'm saved" claims were just wishful thinking so I wouldn't have to feel guilty while falling headlong into the eternal abyss, The cake is a lie.

The cake is a pie.

So, I guess I don't miss Protestantism that much after all.
Funny I was raised a Protestant and was never taught any of that.

bogdan, get down to yr nearest coptic church for the night of good friday (usually 10 or 11pm till 6am, so you'll have finished yr own good friday service by then, and then u get to sleep saturday daytime which is great preparation for Holy Pascha). we read the whole of the book of revelation during this service, with lots of other readings, prayers, singing and end the nights festivities in the best possible way - with a liturgy (Holy Communion). in my previous church, they are doing a Bible study on revelation. we don't get 2 bothered by the multiple 'end of the world' internet 'prophesies' but we don't dodge the issue either. leap of faith, hi, i didn't 'see' u before so i looked at yr other posts and i saw u used to be methodist. did u know john wesley was heavily influenced by some of the orthodox church fathers? i had lots of methodist influence in the middle of my childhood - so it was not a big change in theology to become orthodox. everyone who misses singing, get out and write some more orthodox songs! there's nothing against that as long as the theology is sound. one that we have translated into english is 'night of the last supper': http://tasbeha.org/hymn_library/index.php?a=view&id=926so if u r not good at song writing, get translating. if u want change, be part of that change! i suppose i used to miss understanding everything (my previous church translated at least 80% of the non-english stuff but i still got lost sometimes), but now i've been orthodox for 3 years, i don't miss anything of my previous churches. a few churches i went to didn't have Bible study, but my current one has it after liturgy and mid-week! i feel very blessed, like i have 2 much chocolate cake...

ortho cat, ismi, come to my church! or (as there seems to be a little pond between us) start doing these things at your church. seriously. and may God guide u as you remind your parish of their God-given privilege to pray and study the Bible together. by all means get these supervised by a subdeacon or priest, but remember the early Christians met regularly in their homes and were full of joy. this is no innovation!

I agree. There is simply not enough interest yet. I'm praying there will be, though, and maybe Father can just start one with two or three. He said he has made several attempts, though, so I can't convince him that it will "work" this time. But when we are actually in the Church perhaps we could bring up the issue again.
