Commentaries on Scripture
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:10:15 AM »
A member of the board inquired in the unofficial chat about commentaries on the Scriptures. He was interested more in modern ones, but I figured it might be productive if we compiled a list of all the Scriptural commentaries that we know of that have been translated into English. Excellent work, Asteriktos. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die [...] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." -The Lord Jesus Christ

St Ephrem wrote commentaries (or interpretations) of several OT books--I believe at least the Torah.  I have read his on Genesis on Exodus.  The texts were translated into English and are part of a series of Church Fathers works.

I can't recommend Fr. Lawrence enough, I'll tell you what!

I've always wondered what the Orthodox thought of Matthew Henry's Commentary?  I don't own any, but I recall I liked them.

I used to use the Matthew Henry Commentary before I was introduced to the Church fathers.  Honestly, I haven't found anything bad with it with the limited use I've had, but obviously since it comes from a Protestant tradition, caution is important.

I've never heard a bad word about Blessed Theophylact's commentary, is it "OK" for an OO?

Father Tadros Malaty has written plenty that can be found for free online in English (most at orthodoxebooks.org, Gospel of St John at other places). The editing isn't the best (horrible) in some of the ebooks though.

Are there any "modern" translations of the St John Chrysostom gospel ones?

I can't answer your OO question, but regarding modern translations of St. John Chrysostom's Gospel works, I assume by modern you mean newer than the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers translation from the 19th century?  If so, the Catholic University of America Press did a translation of St. John Chrysostom's commentary on the Gospel of John, which is available in paper and ebook forms. It is split into two volumes and is $40 per volume.

I still have, and occasionally use, Lenski's Commentaries on the New Testament.  They are conservative Lutheran and I find them quite useful.  In many ways, they are what lead me to the Orthodox Church.
I would be happy to agree with you, but then both of us would be wrong.

In the meantime, while hopefully someone more knowledgable will post, fwiw I've heard that St. Theophylact followed St. John Chrysostom fairly closely. Never compared the two, but that's what I've read.

Some expositive sermons on the Books of Tobit, Revelation and the Epistle of St. James by Fr. Athanasios Mitilinaios (translated from the Greek
by Constantine Zalalas) are available on http://www.pantocrator.me/en/ in audio format. More of his live recorded sermons on other books of Scripture are available in Greek on the same website.

Anyone know where I can get St. Ambrose's commentary on Luke without paying a million dollars?

St. Theophylact's commentary on Galatians is now available in English: http://www.chrysostompress.org/catalog.html

The commentary on Ephesians is now translated and should be available in March.

On of St. Theophylact's gospel commentaries is available online:

http://www.holytrinitymission.org/books/english/matthew_theophilactos.htm

They really are top notch, I wish they were all online. If anyone wants to get me an awesome Pascha present, well, there's an idea.

I have found it interesting in my searches of patristic writings (and I see it confirmed here) that there are many Gospel commentaries written on Matthew and John, but few written on Mark and Luke.  I wonder why that is.
God bless!

Huh, yeah it does seem that way, not sure why...

St. Gregory of Narek has a commentary on the Song of Solomon.

St. Andrew of Caesarea has commentary on Revelation. As does Archbishop Averky Taushev. There's also the book "Ultimate Things," by D.E. Engleman

A couple more...

St. Augustine - Two Books on Genesis Against the Manichees and (An Unfinished Book) on the Literal Interpretation of Genesis
St. John Chrysostom - St. John Chrysostom: Eight Sermons on the Book of Genesis

Quote
St. John Chrysostom - Homilies on Genesis -- In 2 Volumes (amazon.com and other book sellers)

This should read three volumes, not two.

This is a Catholic source but it is loaded with many Saints.  Click "Search a Biblical text and its commentary" and then you can find commentaries by actual biblical passages.  It's really cool and has many Orthodox Saints.
