Here comes Windows 8
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:25:25 AM »
Microsoft unveiled its latest version of Windows, at a conference in California.

From the article:
Quote
The system will function through one of two interfaces; a traditional desktop, similar to that seen in previous editions of Windows, and a tablet version, known as Metro.

Metro features larger, chunky controls of the sort that best suit touchscreen use. The current lack of such an input method is widely seen as the reason why few Windows 7 tablets exist.

I think it'll be a game changer.

No no no NO Noooooooo!!!!

After that aberration called Vista we now have the glory and wonder that is Windows 7, which is more compatible than and almost as awesome as Windows 2000.  Please, don't subject me to something wretched!  I beg of thee!

Relax, you still have the good ole Windows 7 type shell. The touch interface, called Metro, will be there as well, but you don't have to use it. And I'm sure your Julian Calendar app will still work  ;)

Come again? Does such a thing exist? How I'd love to program my computer to read September 1, 7520 without it screwing with the internal clock/calendar.

....it's all good.

Rolling out new OS's every few years, keeps many, many, many folks employed!

Not only those who actively work on the OS, but, those who support applications, software, servers, etc.  Everything will have to eventually get migrated to the new OS.

Before that time, the software will need to be tested, repacked, tested, etc.

Work, work, work!

Win8 good for the economy!

I was trying my hand at humor, unfortunately it was a big #FAIL.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if some ingenious Russian or Serbian programmer did create such an application.

I wonder how much MS will charge for Win8.  No doubt 200 or more dollars.

Depends what you want to do with your computer.

If you've got a brand new DX 11 (or older DX 10) video card and you want to use it to the full potential, yes, sure, upgrade.

Other than that there isn't anything important that 7 can do that XP couldn't.

I TRIED to stay on XP, but I swear, someone installed Vista while I was sleeping or something. I don't even remember approving the change and I was super angry when it happened. I love XP and hate the .docx extensions. BLAH YOU, MICROSOFT.

So you are lucky, Akimori. Just stay on top of your updates! I think we all need to let go and change though. I am surprised that we still have some die-hard 95ers around here.
