What would a good biblical definition of "hope"be?
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:39:54 PM »
An online friends posted the following: "Biblical definition of Hope: a strong and confident expectation."

She said that she came up with this definition from the QSB bible.

This doesn't seem to me to be a good/healthy idea of hope to me. It seems more like a "name it and claim it" type of view. I am fairly sure that this view is derived from Hebrews 11:1.

Does anyone have an opinion on the above definition of hope?

It seems to me that the definition above is more of a secular views. To me, a biblical/Christian view of hope is more akin to a desire. We pray "...Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." This seems like a statement of hope without expectation.

Patience and trust awaiting salvation (as how I understand what St. Paul says in Romans 8:24-25).

Hope always has expectation.

The OSB says;

Hope; An expectation of something desired. Christian hope is trust and confidence in the eternal goodness of God, a faith that Christ has overcome the suffering of this world. God is both the cause and goal of hope. (John 16:20-24, 33; Rom 5:2, 8:24,25; 2 Thess 2;16)
