Monastery Complex Fire Update: 2000 acres. 9 homes destroyed. The monastery appears to be safe, glory to God; however, the cemetery has burned Over 100 homes have been evacuated, including the homes of many parishioners and Fr. Michael and family. The sisters are helping battle the fire, and have been taken in by local Orthodox families. Retreat ctr ~15% burned. Many evacuees at the fairgrounds in Goldendale.

This is from a variety of media sources, and people with ties to the monastery.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Mandatory-evacuations-under-way-near-Goldendale-129447668.html

Mandatory evacuations are in place for many people in the area. The above is the most recent article on the fire. The media has been taking a great number of photos of the sisters fighting the fire in their full habits.

Our parish is really grieved at the fire in the cemetery. Our priest of blessed memory Fr. Thomas is buried there. Please pray in particular for Kh. Miriam, she must be quite upset that the gravesite of her husband has been touched by this fire. (They also have three adult children as well that could use prayer)

I've been to this monastery a few times, and the sister of a friend of mine is one of the nuns there.

Update with a (very) brief interview with Sister Parthenia:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/129454673.html

The story is now making national news as well:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/09/nuns-fight-washington-wildfire/

Quote
Greek Orthodox nuns in Washington state took matters into their own hands when they feared a wildfire was threatening their nearby monastery. Dressed in their habits, the women grabbed garden hoses and fought the fire alongside firefighters and other concerned citizens on Wednesday.

Update on the Monastery Complex Fire: the nuns are doing well and are monitoring hot spots in the area. The cemetary area is black up to the edges of the graves, but the wooden crosses are still there. The homes of the Orthodox families in the area are ok, but please continue to pray those who have lost their homes and those who are helping to get the fire under control.

Interview with the sisters.

The monastery is safe, the fire is currently 50% contained.

In addition to this fire, please pray for those in TX dealing with fires as well. I know one Orthodox family that lost their home in the TX fires.

Glory be to God for the good news! Now let's pray that the firefighters who remain on the scene are able to finish this fire off quickly so they can go home.
