Boston’s St. Anthony’s Feast set for the weekend

This is a great feast and part of Italian American Catholic tradition.  If you in or around Boston then make it to Endicott st up in the North end for this the Feast of all Feast (As described by Nat. Geo. some years ago).  The whole atmosphere is one of a religious carnival, strong, earthy, ethnic devotion transplanted from the peasant soil of southern Italy to puritan New England.  I real sight to see for those of any faith.

Note:  Due to hurricane Irene, they have moved the main procession of St Anthony to next Sunday, Sept. 4Th at 12 noon, so the article is somewhat incorrect.

BOSTON — The largest Italian-American festival in New England is set for this weekend.

The St. Anthony’s Feast will be held Saturday and Sunday in Boston’s North End neighborhood.

The annual event honors the neighborhood’s patrons, Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy, with colorful parades, religious services, strolling singers, live entertainment and Italian food.

The festival is capped off by a 10-hour procession of the Statue of Saint Anthony with marching bands and floats. That’s when the Statue of the Saint returns to its chapel as confetti and streamers cascade from the rooftops.

The Boston festival was started in 1919 by Italian immigrants from the small town of Montefalcione in Avellino.

I already went to this...last weekend.

They were able to fit in the other stuff before the storm blew in, including a cooking demonstration by Giada de Laurentiis.



Safe to say, this delectable dish cooked up some nice dishes of her own!


But you're right, though, they moved the big third day of the feast, including the mass and procession, to September 4.

The Saint Anthony Society Feast Committee is happy to announce that we will be hosting a one-day festival in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua on Sunday, September 4, 2011 beginning with an outdoor celebration of the Eucharist at 10 a.m. on the main stage. The Grand Procession of Saint Anthony will begin at 12 Noon accompanied by marching bands and devotees. Vendors and live entertainment on the main stage with performances by Seabreeze and Itamia will be ongoing until 11 p.m.
