Just out of curiosity, what is the point of priests to wear elaborate vestments during services?

It began as a resistance to liberal barbarian fashions, where clergy preferred conservative modest dress (the dress of Greco-Roman antiquity). Being thus set apart, the vestments became part of the church liturgical environment, which is why they change throughout the seasons and aren't supposed to be worn outside of the liturgical context.
