Car Question
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:43:26 PM »
I remember learning that it's a bad idea to wash your car when it's hot outside. Supposedly it will cause internal parts to crack due to sudden temp change. Is this true or a an old husbands' tale?

Codswallop. Waxing the car could be tricky, but thermal shock to components through washing? No chance. The water coming out of the hose will be warm anyway.

What he said.  Thermal Shock requires a pretty significant temperature change.  We deal with it a bit at work but this is when you put 50 degree F water into a metal section that is over 900 degrees F!

Are you talking about the car's internal parts or your internal parts?  :D

I believe it's a bad idea because it could dry too fast and leave water spots. But that does not stop me. I often wash and wax on hot days and the car look better than when I started.

If this were the case, then people where I'm from (Chandler, AZ) would be able to wash their cars only a few times a year.

Washing a car in direct sunlight is not advisable because of water spots as was mentioned... but water making parts crack? That will never, ever happen. When it's lightly raining is the best time for car washing for this reason.

Probably because they're against the law around these here parts (< 5 characters)... Yes, I did just read the rules.
