Give it a few hours and I'm sure we'll see an official translation.

Of course the Russian Church Abroad already has available a beautiful and compunctionate "Akathist for the repose for those who have fallen asleep" in which we pray for suicides and other souls in peril. It was printed in Orthodox Life, Vol 6, No. 5, Sept-Oct.,1955, p. 3-11.

This is from Ikos 5:

And we believe that even beyond the grave Thy loving kindness, which is merciful even
to all rejected sinners, does not fail. We grieve for hardened and wicked blasphemers of
Thy Holiness. May Thy saving and gracious will be over them. Forgive, O Lord, those
who have died without repentance.

Save those who have committed suicide in the darkness of their mind,
that the flame of their sinfulness may be extinguished in the ocean of Thy grace.

O Lord of unutterable Love, remember Thy servants who have fallen asleep.


I am sending herewith the whole Akathist as an attachment.

IF the bishop has proof that the suicide lost his/her mind  (psychosis, death from drinking/drug use), then that person may be given proper burial according to the normal rite.

My cousin has just committed suicide, and I would like to know:  does anyone here know of an ENGLISH translation of this text?

I dropped the text into Google Translate and it seems most of the texts are hymns taken from other various services. I looked up the proper English translations for the hymns and assembled it together (below).

I don't speak Russian or Slavonic, so somebody would have to translate the prayer, however. You might try the Language Forum here on OC.Net. From what I can tell, though, it would appear to be a very sad prayer, begging the Lord for mercy for the deceased and healing for the hearts of the living.

i have a close friend who is a psychiatrist (and orthodox) who has researched this issue and believes many of the early church fathers had a much kinder approach to suicide victims than some of the recent church fathers.
i can ask him for references if any of you need them.
i am also particularly interested in this area, so am following this thread.

Not that I know of. I just now stumbled across this and remembered my priest was looking for something that might be like this. He's fluent, so if it's what he wants, he might do a translation. If he does, I'll post it here.
