looking for an icon of St. Petka (Paraskeva) of Iasi?
« on: July 26, 2011, 12:37:51 AM »
I am looking for an icon of St. Paraskeva of Iasi without any luck.  When I save enough, I would love to have one commissioned.  until then, does anyone know where I could buy one online?

This is the Paraskeva I'm speaking of.
http://www.orthodoxwiki.org/Paraskeve_the_New

When I first read her story and the miracles attributed to her, I actually cried (in the middle of class, too).  I really feel I want an icon of this saint I've come to love to much.

also, many icons exist of St. Paraskeva, It's just nearly impossible tot ell which one it is (unless she's holding human eyes, or a Romanian scroll)

Search for it online in Romanian: Sfanta Cuvioasa Parascheva de la Iasi, or at least in the abbreviated form Sf Parascheva.

You'll find plenty of pictures and icons.

One you'll see all over Romania is this one:

My personal favorite is this one, which exists (I assume) because there is also a very famous church in Iasi dedicated to the Three Hierarchs:

But for I am a man not textueel I wol noght telle of textes neuer a deel. (Chaucer, The Manciple's Tale, 1.131)

I was recently blessed to be able to venerate the cloth that covers her relics, the smell of myrrh filled the room! I hope you are able to find an icon you like, she is an amazing saint.
Somewhere on Athos, Antonis groans, and the skulls of the holy brethren with him!

I will actually be afforded the chance to do so again this Friday! I will remember you in my prayers when I do.  :)

I got a VERY nice old mother of pearl immitation frame that was my grandmother's.  I'm going to print out the above icon with other Romanian saints standing next to her, and make my own.  pray for me!  I'll post a picture when I'm done.

My eldest daughter's patron saint is Paraskevi. You need to look for all the alternate spellings, there are quite a few icons of her available. We have about two of them in our home.

The hardest icon for us to find was St. Kassiane.

Today is her feast day too!

Honestly I don't have the time or inclination to post every single one I have seen, I have seen her icon everywhere icons are sold online. You just have to look for the alternate spellings. i posted the above from two good online icon sources, if you do a little searching you will find plenty more.

Thank you for the links, but I believe that, at least the last two, are of St. Paraskeva the Roman.  The St. Paraskeva I'm looking for is Romanian.

She's actually Greek, from Anatolia, but her relics are in Iasi. She is most commonly known as St. Paraskeva the New, St. Paraskeva of Iasi, or St. Paraskeva of the Balkans, because her relics also spent some time in Serbia as well.

I see!  How interesting!  I assumed she was Romanian.  Now that I look back at her life story, your right.

It is so difficult to find an icon h=of her, because most "paraskeva" icons are of the older St. Paraskeva.

You are not looking for Paraskeve the new, she is from the 11th century:

http://orthodoxwiki.org/Paraskeve_the_New

You want the original St. Paraskeve if you are looking for the one that often has a bowl of eyes in the icon.

Her feast is on the 14th of October, not today.
She hears, upon that water without sound,
A voice that cries, “The tomb in Palestine
Is not the porch of spirits lingering.
It is the grave of Jesus, where he lay.”
We live in an old chaos of the sun,
Or old dependency of day and night,
Or island solitude, unsponsored, free,
Of that wide water, inescapable.

Romanian ≠ Roman

Romania is a country :D Romanians are from Romania, not Rome.

I thought that it was, Thanks, Augustin!

Today is the feast day of St. Paraskevi of Rome.

This is the St. Paraskeva I was looking for:

Different saints who often get mixed up.

Ok, well then you are incorrect about the bowl of eyes. St. Paraskeve the New should never be portrayed with a bowl of eyes. St. Paraskeve of Rome was the one that blinded her persecutor with the oil she was boiling in, then healed him.

That is what confused me. You spoke about the icon of St. Paraskeve of Rome and posted an icon and link of St. Paraskeve the New.

What story did you read about this saint? Are you sure you are thinking of the right one?

This one:

forgive me, Quinault!!!!!

I was confused.  I was looking for St. Paraskeva the new.  I got the two mixed up when I was trying to note the differences between the two depicted above.  I have my "Romanian Patericon" on my desk next to me, and the Paraskeva I'm looking for is "the new", from the 11th century.

Sorry for the confusion!   :)
