Shadows of War is simply amazing.

Took it just for kicks... The Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology

80% Explorer
53% Killer
40% Socialiser
27% Achiever

Seems pretty close. I'd say I'm more like:

85% explorer
40% killer
20% achiever
10% socialiser

As a side note related to achiever, I got my first platinum trophy ever (Horizon Zero Dawn) a few months back; in most games I just can't be bothered to run around the world finding all 74 magic teacups or whatever stuff they put in to make getting 100% more difficult.

Just got Wolfenstein II today. It's great. I've already been killed a kajillion times.

Super Mario Odyssey. Currently in the Metro Kingdom (New Donk City). Outstanding game that has it a nice balance between easy controls and gameplay and genuine challenges that, while requiring skill, never cause you to get stuck on them. The plethora of moons makes it easy to pick and choose which tasks you need to accomplish to progress, allowing for the player to play to his strengths. The new locals are refreshing, each fit in Mario universe while still bringing something unique to the table. While the game’s hype did play up itself as coming from both 64 and Sunshine, it feels distinct. However, there are certain elements that do feel like the fame straight out of Sunshine, where the player is whipped up into a stage without FLUDD Cappy.

Finished it... would say it went from good to very good by the end. A lot of fun, a lot of content, and some interesting world building. Also more laughs than I got from the main game, and a sad moment or two. Can't wait for HZD2, maybe in the "forbidden west" (aka Nevada and California). I just hope Sony doesn't try to push for as quick a release as possible, quality be damned.

Tried out Shadow of War, but the game just wasn't for me. Currently playing a game of Civ VI. Have been thinking about picking up either Life is Strange, Hob, or Hellblade, but haven't pulled the trigger.

Hey Justin have you played Bloodborne yet?

Haven't tried it--didn't really seem like my type of game--though I've watched a couple long youtube videos about it (lol). How is it?

Continuing to play the new Wolfenstein. Still getting killed a lot. Made progress anyway. I probably will have to use a walkthrough before I'm done.

Getting desensitized to some things and not others in video games is kinda strange sometimes. I was watching a Let's Player yesterday playing GTAV, which naturally involved killing lots of people, and I didn't bat an eyelash at it... but then he started walking around getting into fist fights and yelling things like "how do you like that b*tch?" and I got angry and felt like never watching the dude again. And he's never struck me as some idiot bro-gamer type person before, but just watching that second scenario I was clutching my pearls and getting all indignant and I guess feeling how others do when it comes to pretty much all video game violence.  :-\ ???

Some people probably do react that way.  And it's possible some people think that everyone who plays violent video games is thinking along the lines of the Let's Play guy, or will be soon enough.  That's not the only reason one might be averse, though.

Plus in your scenario, it's pure game play vs. player narration.  I think the issue is more with the guy's reaction to his own game play.
Is any of the above Orthodox?  I have no clue, so there's that.

Oh gosh. You know, as Orthodox, you'd think the concept that putting our body and minds thru certain motions affects our souls would not be so very dang hard for us to grasp. I'm sorry, but just why are we feeling compelled to parrot gamer apologetics here? Are OC.netters violent gamers, like we tend to be listeners to violent music? If so, why not pray for our souls? It's entirely un-Orthodox to be parroting secular excuses for ourselves, isn't it? But here I go expecting Orthodox things of OC.net again.

Come off it. Two threads over, you were parroting a secular excuse yourself ... 'navigating practical dangers.'

And the violent books a lot of those are based on!

Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth" was released as an X Box One game. It's really good. You have to take various roles in the construction of a cathedral. It's based on the novel. The artwork is beautiful.

I hardly play video games, I only opened this thread because I saw you post  in it, and I bet myself your post was people feeling the wrath and hell fire of Porterthustra's pet peeves. I won the bet.

Huh. As tho your life and your relationship to others online is some bizarre video game of your own (particularly bizarre as, when you find Orthodoxy or Christianity in a game named "Orthodox Christianity," then evidently the goal is to attack and eliminate it). Yet no points for this sortee -- you quoted but failed at all to follow the thread.

"Particularly bizarre" is redundant.

You fashion yourself a wordsmith. Everything OK? Not stroking out on us, are you, pops? I shall offer a "Lord Have Mercy" for you right now.  :)

It's not parroting or a compulsion, for one.  For another, consider it more like an irenic approach than apologetics.   :)
Beyond that and what was already said, I'd have to get autobiographical and this really isn't the place.

Although I will say this: your concern is valid when it come to VR, in my opinion.  A lot more work is required to remain detached, but time will tell what effect that will have.  In the meanwhile, I'm looking forward to "seeing" elephants and such with it.  I'll leave Gorn for others.   ;)

I never played Harvest Moon or any of the dozens of mobile/facebook farming games, so this is sort of my introduction to the genre. Added bonus: even Porter can't get mad at this one. :P

I was never much into videogames, but I was a big fan of the card game Yu-Gi-Oh when I was younger and have been playing Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Generation and Yu-Gi-Oh Pro later. It seems the game got a resurgence due to Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links, which I haven't played yet, but I'm not sympathetic to it.

I may do that. :)

Anyhoo, I recently picked up, for the X Box One, some horror games: Hello Neighbor, Inside and Limbo, in a combined pack, and Little Nightmares; plus another copy of Rugby 15, 'cause I couldn't find my old one.

Don't point that finger any closer at me! I might be in serious trouble now!

"Particularly bizarre" is redundant.

You fashion yourself a wordsmith. Everything OK? Not stroking out on us, are you, pops? I shall offer a "Lord Have Mercy" for you right now.  :)
No, because bizarre refers to the noun and particularly to the bizarreness. Bizarreness is always particular, but it can be particularly particular. Particular and bizarre would be redundant, particularly bizarre is not. I'm not a native English speaker, but this is just applied predicate logics.

LOL! They snipped the whole first season in the West, which led to a whole generation wondering why on Earth a schoolkid would occasionally become an ancient Pharaoh while playing his favourite card game, apparently due to his shady amulet.

Cinco Paus, a fantastic semi-roguelike by Mike Brough, whose last game Imbroglio is a big favorite of mine. You play a wizard escaping a maze full of enemies. You have five wands whose effects are randomly determined and unknown to you until you test them out. They can do straightforward things like hurting enemies or grabbing treasure, or odder things like summoning evil shrimp or bouncing around the walls leaving spiky vines on the floor. Sometimes they help, sometimes they really don't and your only hope is to dash to the exist with as little damage as possible. The game ends when you move through five zones; however, when you start the next game it is really a continuation of the last, where you keep items you picked up in the previous game, though your wands' effects are reset. Over time if you collect enough stuff you can get special once-per-game use items like statue that makes frogs into your friends or a decoy that attracts enemies away from you. You lose all this, of course, when you get killed, so your next run starts from scratch and you try to see if you can get a higher score.

Cinco Paus
This is Portuguese, for either "five sticks", "five bucks" or "five penises". I wonder which is the proper meaning, lol

I assume five sticks, for the wands. The whole game is in Portuguese for some reason (I don't think it's the programmer's native tongue).

Spelled a little differently, but I still have to go listen to it now. Thanks.

Luke-warm take of the day: if you skip a bunch of the story-related bits in a video game, you give up the right to complain about the story not being cohesive or not explaining things.
