My favorite games ranked in order:

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Battle Garegga
3. Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
4. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
5. Super Metroid
6. Super Mario Bros 3
7. Resident Evil 4
8. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
9. Starcraft
10. ICO/Shadow Of the Collossus Remastered
11. Last of Us Remastered
12. Shenmue 1 and 2
13. F-Zero
14. Counter Strike Source
15. Sunset Riders (Arcade version and CO-OP)

1-5 locked, the rest can change.

Games I've spent too many hours playing: Starcraft, Counter Strike, Soul Calibur, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time.

I forgot Super Bomberman with the multi-tap expansion to play 4 players = win. And Super Smash Bros Melee.

With friends growing up and after, fighting games reigned supreme. Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn, Smash Bros on the 64 and Gamecube, Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, Tekken Tag, Marvel vs Capcom 2.

The only fighting game I play these days is Super Turbo, and that's online with anyone in the world. There's still a lot of fans for such an old glitchy game.

nice list! I haven't played Chrono Trigger in many, many years. I keep thinking it either Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) for best RPG of all time. I need to play both again, however I been warned the Final Fantasy games don't hold up too good  :(

15. Sunset Riders (Arcade version and CO-OP)

Sunset Riders is possibly my favorite side scroller. My buddy had a bachelor party in Philly a few months ago and part of it entailed going to a "barcade" which had, among other things, Sunset Riders. Man, was I itching to play it but these other dudes would not get off of it the whole time I was there.

I also see Bayonetta is confirmed as the last Super Smash Bros DLC character.

Wonderful...
Not a fan? From what I've seen of the series, neither am I.

Supposedly Bayonetta 2 is the best Wii U game. If it's anything like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black, I might have to try that out sometime.

FFVI is great stuff, easily best game in the series, it just doesn't hold the sentimental value that Chrono does.

More ambivalent. But then, I tend to let social justice stuff override other considerations (at least on things that I don't have massive nostalgia goggles for). I know that's not necessarily best practices, but it is what it is...

Never played the game but the artwork certainly invites an early dismissal.

Years ago my brother was into this game and a few times I watched him play it. I don't remember much, but I thing I found some parts really funny. It was definitely unique in gameplay style. I don't know if you ever did tabletop RPG's but this is based on the world of RuneQuest, which is definitely one of the more unique, non-Tolkien-recycling, and well thought-out fantasy worlds.

Panzer Elite. From 1999 and very old school, but the best tank sim ever.

Good enough graphics to show the zimmeritt coating.

I used to play Panzer Front on the playstation, also from 1999.  It had a realistic gun sight and you controlled the tracks individually.

I really wish they would remake it right. There were two "remakes" which were nothing but arcade style shoot em up tank games. The original had calculations for where you were hitting, what kind of gun you were using vs the thickness of armor/sloping etc. You could shoot a T34 on the frontal armor 20x with a Pz IVd and never penetrate because of that lousy short barrel 75mm. You had to get to the flanks to knock them out. The recent ones went to a stupid hitpoint system which is the dumbest thing ever in tank games.
God bless!

I don't particularly like hitpoint systems, but it makes an online game playable.  But for single player, I'd rather see it gone.  I think one-shot kills, or random damageless penetrations, or mobility kills would make an online game just too frustrating for most players.

One thing I liked about Panzer Front was that it had AI controlled infantry, artillery, and aircraft.  It also had unbalanced numbers.  If you were a German, you might get a supporting tank if you were lucky, maybe an assault gun or tank destroyer.  If you were allies you were never alone, but then you could watch in horror as all your buddies went up in flames, taken apart by 8.8cms at 2000 meters.

I went ahead and shelled out $5 for the iOS port. It's awesome. A lot more complex than I remembered, though easy to get into. I would definitely recommend this game. It's sort of like Civilization meets Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, but it's better and deeper than both. The mythos is great and it's clear the writers know a few more things about anthropology than your average fantasy game designer.

Rare Revealed: The Making of Perfect Dark

About 13 minutes long. Entertaining. Among other things, I was surprised how hands-off they said the bosses/suits/leads were during development.

"Here it is: one of the big Making Of features that we felt it would be an injustice not to create. From decisions made in GoldenEye's wake to Jo Dark's debut in the space year 2000, key members of the Perfect Dark team cover it all."

Yeah it's one of my favorite games ever (although I'd say its unplayable today), I knew about 85% of what they talked about in the video. I could listen to Klobb tell stories for hours working at Nintendo/Microsoft/Rare, there's a lot of fascinating stuff back when gaming was still seen as children's entertainment.

Fun fact about Goldeneye, during its development back in 96, Rare ended up maxing out the N64 specs with just its game engine. They were developing the game using Silicon Graphics machines unaware of what the final N64 specs were going to be, but when it came they had to cut about half of the textures. Much of the game uses greyscale textures in order not to tax the processor, and you could double the resolution (if Rare needed to use a color here or there they just added it in the vertex).

It still blows my mind they only had 10 people work on it, 8 of whom never worked on a video game. Only one guy created the multiplayer and Rare saw it as an afterthought.

I can't imagine what it would be like developing games back in the 90s, it must have been brutal. Compared to today, with having access to different game engines like Unreal, Unity, Source, etc, I'm sure developing a game is much easier since you have a lot more robust tools and if you are a programmer your job is easier. Programming a video game these days seems terrifying, all that code and crap, depending on the genre I'm sure it gets pretty complex.

It's interesting to look at the talent back in the late 80s and 90s when it came to game artists. You look at the artwork Inafune was drawing up back when he designed Mega Man, he would be laughed at if he ever brought his work to a game studio today. A lot of those old dudes were mere cartoonists, now its all about photoshop wonderworks. Of course it helps that they were limited in 8bit or 16bit lol.

Thanks for the info. It looked deeper than it should be the little and I saw and read.

Will pick it up,  although I dunno when I will get to it.

Spent my video game hours this weekend reverse trolling some jerks who were going to mob up on nine year old noobs playing their Xmas presents.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown.  It is a remake from the old '96 classic, X-Com. Definitely a worthy successor. The nostalgia with pretty new graphics is almost intoxicating. I'm pretty sure I won't be doing much else for the next few weeks.

I remember this hilarious TV ad from the 90's for the original X-Com. It seems they had a minimal advertising budget, as it consisted of one of the programmers sitting in front of a computer and playing the game and describing how awesome it was. He yells, "Yes, I nailed that alien!" I wish it were on Youtube.

;D

That sounds like something I need to find. It has got to be on the internet somewhere! I love X-Com, it is one of my favorite games of all time. And yes, sometimes I do yell "Yes, I nailed that Sectoid!" on occasion much to my wife's chagrin.
God bless!

FFVI is great stuff, easily best game in the series, it just doesn't hold the sentimental value that Chrono does.

What did you think of Chrono Cross?

Terribly underrated, almost as good as Trigger. I only knew one person that tried to convince Cross > Trigger.

He yells, "Yes, I nailed that alien!" I wish it were on Youtube.

lol that awesome, I need to find a clip online.

- I have come to terms with the fact that this game [Dragon Age Inquisition] on the PS3 is not just unpretty, but that it is actually in many ways downright ugly.

Over a year later, and I'm about to see what it looks like on a PS4. This bet'r be good.  8)

I also see Bayonetta is confirmed as the last Super Smash Bros DLC character.

Wonderful...
Supposedly Bayonetta 2 is the best Wii U game. If it's anything like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black, I might have to try that out sometime.

It's garbage.
The entire series is basically about aesthetic appeal with little to no substance (that's not me being critical, that's, IIRC, what the director said)--which explains the fanservice and general purpose outrageousness of the attacks, monsters, and so on.

I only demoed it either. Looked pretty cool, but not for me. Didn't care for what passed for a storyline, either.

I'll probably still get the DLC, though.

Been consumed by Xenoblade X, just read the most spot game review ever for it. Was rolling as I read it. Brilliant stuff.

I play NHL 14, but am waiting to be able to buy a new-gen console and play the newer games, because the gameplay seems to be way better, from what I have seen. However, I like the story modes in the older games.

Sorry bro, I didn't see this.

Maybe this is only amusing after playing 14 Xenoblade 14 hours straight. The above and link make clear what the link is about. SFW

I have never heard of this game and will probably never play it, but this is still pretty funny and possibly the best video game review I've read.

I'm still working on Xillia. School, work, and anime eat up a bunch of my time, understandably.

I've had a PS4 since Christmas and have done all of 2-3 hours of gaming on it. Curse you, Civ IV! More than a decade after your release and you've still got your claws in me.
