The new edition of the Common English Bible (CEB) will be released in print and made available to the public for the first time on August 1, publicist Audra Jennings has told The Christian Post. The publisher of the new version is hoping it will make the Bible understandable and attractive to as many people as possible. To that end, the new edition of the CEB has made several “bold” translation choices, including changing Jesus' “Son of Man” title to “the Human One.” With the complete edition of the Common English Bible arriving from the printers this week and rolling into stores starting next month, associate publisher Paul Franklyn said the goal of translators was to make the Bible accessible and more appealing to readers of various backgrounds and denominations. “There are a number of translations available for conservative churches,” Franklyn told The Tennessean. “This is trying to make a bridge between conservatives, moderates and liberals.” http://www.christianpost.com/news/new-bible-to-go-on-public-release-changes-jesus-son-of-man-to-the-human-one-52232/Speechless............

What a crock. In May, Fuller Theological Seminary voted to add the Common English Bible to the NRSV and the TNIV as translations that could be required for students doing biblical studies. "We wanted something that was an academically excellent translation from Greek and Hebrew, and one that reflected our strong position regarding women in leadership," Dr. Joel B. Green, professor of New Testament Interpretation, told The Christian Post. Yup. Remaking God and scripture in their own image. 'Nuff said.

"Child of Humanity" actually conveys the concept well and provides a helpful alternative to understanding the language used, but the fact remains that "Son of Man" is a Messianic/Christological title and will always be the standard. Other translations of it that are gender neutered can help fill out the idea expressed in a fuller way, but "the Human One" is just abysmal.

No, just that he's toeing their line. I suppose it could just be a coincidence. Personally I think people should stop with the translations already!

Some other changes in the Common English Bible include swapping out “alien” or “foreigner,” used by some translations for passages like Leviticus 19:33-34; the Common English Bible applies the term “immigrant” instead. Oh, how I love it when the Bible is rewritten to speak right into the heart of contemporary politics. Merely being present in a foreign country—which is what "alien" and "foreigner" mean—does not make one an "immigrant."

Umm...do these people actually have any, what's the word, "qualifications" to be translating anything? For instance, while "Son of Man" may be able to be translated literally as "the Human One" (though another poster suggested a better alternative that is more modern), it ignores the historical context of the phrase, which was a way of referring to oneself without saying "I" constantly. "The Human One" serves no purpose except to confuse people who might not have previously read a Bible before.
And an alien or foreigner is NOT always an immigrant. I know plenty of people who have gone down to Mexico, seeing as I am in a border State. Sometimes for a few days, sometimes a few weeks. While all of them were foreigners and aliens, none of them were immigrants. Bogdan is completely correct.

Oh, how I love it when the Bible is rewritten to speak right into the heart of contemporary politics.
Our ability to deceive ourselves is neverending. It reminds me of those online recipe reviews where people recommend 'improvements' in the ingredients to the point where the original recipe is transmogrified:
"That was the best Boeuf Bourguignon I ever had! I didn't have any beef, so I used chicken. I added some frozen peas and potatoes to the onions. My husband and hates red wine and the kids hate garlic, so I made it with a cream sauce instead. Then I threw in some home-made dumplings to give it more body. We'll make it again!"

I don't think I can take this. I'm still nauseated from glancing at the Progressive Christian Portal at patheos.
Ugh.
Next thing you know will be that some Catholic "expert" or "theologian" will demand the Catholics use this abhorrent translation. Why not? Catholics did participate in the project as translators... Yeah, Renegade Nuns and Jesuits, I'll bet.

No, then you'd be offending people who self-identify as tachyons or think they can bilocate. We need to sit and move faster than light at the same time.

That discriminates against people who don't like to do housework and people who self-identify as inanimate objects. You should say, "Fellow occupier of space-time"
What about those with Solipsism Disorder? We shouldn't offend them by assuming we exist. I think we'd all be better off if everyone just stayed very still, and very quiet. Why are you stopping there? Solipsism is merely half-arsed skepticism, and it disgusts me. People should have the cojones to do it the whole way, and not chicken out ...
