So, it is that time... This week I will be flying to an Army base in Texas to get ready for deployment, and sometime after a month there my unit and I will be on our way to some where in Afghanistan. I'll try to keep everything up to date on my blog (which can be reached through my sig). I don't know how much I'll be able to hop on here but I will try to keep in touch. Also I want to say thank you to everybody for making this such a great place to come for discussions, debates, arguments, and threads that are just plain silly. This forum is great and so are the people on it!

8 deployments in 10 years? Wow, I don't think I could handle that, I've been in for almost 8 years and this is my second deployment...

Yeah; let's just say for the sake of everyone involved this will be the last deployment. But where I am going with this is: please know that we are with you in our prayers. Do noty be convinced that you are alone or that no one is concerned about you.

Thank you all for your prayers, and feel free to use whatever name you want for me, but my first name is David.
I just found out today that my platoon has been chosen for a special mission (nothing top secret or dangerous, just a different mission than the rest of our unit) that puts us in Iraq for 4 months before we meet up with our unit in Afghanistan. I think thats good, because Iraq is not as bad as Afghanistan is right now.

Well, I am now in New Mexico for my training. My internet status is almost nil in the barracks, so I am at the MWR using their free stuff. I am trying to stay safe and calm to get through the training here, a lot of stuff has changed since I last deployed.

Make sure that you hook up with St. George Orthodox Military Association: http://www.orthodoxmilitary.org/My husband didn't know about them during his last deployment, but it would have been a great resource.

Yeah, I don't think that I will be staying in this unit after my deployment is over; I'll probably go back to my old MP unit. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with signal or commo, but MP is where its at for me. As for my background image... it was the only picture I could find that I felt showed a Christian soldier, although he is a crusader. Alas, it seems I am stuck with a Westernization idea of what Christianity is. Again, thank you all for your continued prayers. Hey guys, I have made it safely to Kuwait. No I get to hurry up and wait around. My internet time is about to run out, but I wanted you all to know that I am still safe and alive.

So, I know that it has been a while since I have updated this thread, but I just wanted to let you all know that I am back in Kuwait as the occupation of Iraq is coming to a close. I don't know how long I am going to be here or when/if I am going to Afghanistan. My internet is up and down, but that is to be expected with all the soldiers around here.
On a side note, I went up to the PX today just looking around, and one of the booths outside had cloth icons. They were done in the byzantine style but were made from cloth with little crucifixes dangling from the bottom and some had a fish eye on the bottom in the center. They were made so you can hang them on the wall and what not. The PX also had some prayer rugs that did not (from what I could tell) have any Arabic script - though I only took a quick glance.
They have a lot of interesting things around here. I am debating on whether or not to get my wife one of those belly dancer outfits they sell...

These were also widely available in Turkey. I think they're from Greece. I gave one to someone in my church with the evil eye thing and everything and the deacon started fuming. "Those Greeks put evil eyes on everything! That does NOT belong on an icon!"

IDK yet, I'm trying to not get too crazy with my purchases while I'm over here, but one thing I will buy if I can find it is a meerschaum pipe.

While my husband was in Afghanistan he bought me a couple star sapphires. You wife might dig that. In Kuwait you can get almost anything dipped in platinum (or at least you could when my husband was deployed thru there in 2005).
Thanks for updating, I am glad you well.

the 'fish eye' thing is the 'evil eye'; a good luck charm to ward away bad spirits. people from the mediterranean and some african countries believe that someone who is jealous of you can send the 'evil eye'; a bad spirit to give you bad luck. people make images of the 'evil eye' to appease the bad spirits. this is not allowed (and not necessary!) for Christians, so we should never mix the cross of Christ with the 'evil eye' as only Jesus has defeated death and evil; not some little charm that you can carry with you.
by the way, it's also forbidden in islam, but the average muslim doesn't know this. even my very religious 'hijabi' muslim friend is afraid of the 'evil eye'. lots of people in egypt carry these images with them.
thank God that we no longer need to fear evil! (psalm 22/23)

And I'm home on leave! Long flight was long, but we got to stop in Ireland for a 3 hour lay over... pretty nice. My daughter was so excited to see me, but i think that had more to do with opening my Christmas gifts than it did with actually seeing me.

Have some fun and relaxation (hopefully)! Also, if your daughter is anything like mine, then the presents are exciting, but don't forget that it's Dad that is in the heart
