Let say their vestments look similar to the EO Priests' vestments. Under that black robes Priests wear similar black robe (or two black robes - one loose. you tight - depends on the tradition) and after that black robe(s) they wear lay clothes.

I asked our Khouria once how our priest dealt with the heat (we have almost non-existent air conditioning in the Nave). She said that he doesn't wear a shirt underneath the inner robes while wearing the outer vestments during liturgy and it is really hot . He does wear pants at all times. The robes are not dresses exactly, or even like choral robes. There are deep slits on the sides to accommodate movement. And the outer robes/vestments are only worn during services. After services he wears the inner black robes all the time with a shirt underneath. If he didn't wear pants, we would be seeing a LOT of leg.

Of course, a priest could wear a color other than black

The priest at my parish wears a regular black outfit- black shirt (with priest's collar), black slacks and shoes. I know this because I've seen him walk in before church starts.

My priest appears to wear a business shirt under the eisorasson/anteri, which I've never understood -- I would just wear t-shirt and jeans.

Don't apologise, Poppy. Such people specifically go to the effort of adopting the externals of Orthodoxy for certain purposes.

My priest wears the same thing. I don't think I've ever seen my priest in civvies; he simply doesn't wear them. His big decision in the morning seems to be 'slip-ons or ties'? He was a monastic for 20 years. I think if I ever saw him in regular clothes, I'd have an attack of the vapors.

Same here! I actually wasn't sure if priests wore "regular" street clothes. I think I'd be traumatized if I saw him in that, just because it would be so strange!

I like to have fun as well as be serious. Sometimes a weirdly starting thread can create a half decent discussion. What are baptists doing trying to look like they are orthodox though?? Like why?? Why can't they just look like baptists normally do?? what's wrong with their own usual clothing in their services??

In order to deceive and poach the Orthodox. Georgia is a historically Orthodox country. If they try to look Orthodox, they might be more successful in recruiting Orthodox to their sect.

Yeah, now I've read the whole thread, it more than ticks me off...I feel sickened to the core. Bishops? Very disconcerting, even blasphemous. I'd lose posting privileges if I voiced what I really thought. As far as Poppy's original question...I assume my priest wears regular male undergarments under his vestments, I've never thought about it! He wears a long blue robe-like garment underneath the visible priestly vestments...he's mentioned once what it is but I've forgotten, will have to ask him again. He would get very hot in summer with all the layers he normally wears. Outside of serving as a priest, he wears normal street clothing. Welcome back Poppy...please start more threads, your contributions are a breath of fresh air to this forum!

The priests at my home parish generally wear regular clothes. I've seen everything from their work attire(jeans/slacks plus a long-sleeved plaid shirt) to shorts, t-shirts and sandals. Afterwards, they like to drape their cassocks over the chairs so they can dry out, due to all the sweat from wearing all those layers of clothes!

I should ask the Orthodox priests in the Philippines what they wear, because it is really hot there! The RC priests I know would wear a thin white t-shirt which is a common under-shirt usually to trap the sweat. Some would wear pants, not jeans as they are heavy and warm, but slacks made also with thin fabric. Some would even wear shorts.
One time I was supposed to serve outdoors in the middle of summer. I asked our priest (UGCC) if I can wear shorts underneath the cassock. He didn't allow me. I know he struggles during the summer because of the heat. But it doesn't get hot for long periods of time here in BC. So it may be 2 or 3 Sunday Liturgies that the priest has to grin and bear it. Most of the year you'd feel comfortable in the layers you are wearing.

Obviously, in ancient times, little to nothing was worn under the inner cassock. Why is it so necessary to wear pants and business shirt underneath now?

In Greece, due to the heat, you can buy a collar and cuffs to attach to your antiri just so you can look like you're wearing a shirt without dying. It's pretty bizzarre, but Greeks seem to have a thing for posh clothes in church, even when not visible. For me the whole point of a cassock is being able to wear an un-ironed t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms underneath.

Well I cannot speak on behalf of all Priests, but I've noticed that my Priest seems to just wear his normal clothes underneath his Priestly garments. Usually leather shoes and dark jeans.
