Gift for my priest?
« on: June 27, 2011, 12:37:07 PM »
I should be finished with my conversion to the orthodox church within a couple more weeks.  I wondered if it would be appropriate at all for me to give a small gift to my priest.  I was thinking perhaps a travel icon of some kind, but he most likely already has a set.  Can anyone suggest an idea?

I would also like to write to someone and express just how much I appreciate his efforts and how great of a job he is doing in our church.  The church I attend falls under the authority of Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver; would it appropriate for me to write to him or is there a bishop or equivalent under him that would be better?

For me, I do not believe my conversion to the orthodox faith would have been possible if I had not met this specific priest.  I attended a couple of other orthodox churches in my area and did not receive the same "feeling" of sorts that I do when I attend liturgy at the church I am now proud to call my spiritual home.  He has made that possible for me and I am very grateful.

I think that writing Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, is a great idea!  Too often our clergy are not recognized for their work!

As for a gift, you know your priest better than we.

Icons are always a great choice, unless he has already dozens of them!

How are his finances?  Perhaps a VISA gift card would help with family expenses, gas money, etc.

What about something he can use in the church?  New censor?  Nice incense....

How about a restaurant gift card, so that he and Presbytera (is he married?)can have a nice dinner? Presbytera would be a good person to ask, btw, for gift suggestions.

By all means, do write to Metropolitan Isaiah. It will be a nice change for him to receive a letter of appreciation for a priest. Most people only write a bishop to complain! ;)

Yes he is married...they have 5 kids in fact!  :o  Sometimes I don't know how they do it.  Usually when I speak to his wife she often does appear to be tired and just generally in need of rest; I can understand why.  But she is one of the nicest persons I've ever met.

I appreciate the ideas so far...gift card or gift certificate to a nice restaurant, those are good.  Please keep the suggestions coming.

If you have any culinary skills your could whip some food up in a kitchen for him. My wife made some strawberry jam for our priest and he loved it. Coincidently, he really loves strawberries as we found out from his wife after we gave him the jar.

Anything would be great and appreciated I'm sure. I agree with asking Presbytera, she would surely know what he likes.

Just my two cents, here. But, based on the priests I know and their personalities, I think a gift that's not a gift is the best. What I mean is something he is able to use to help others or help his spiritual life (such as icons, etc.). What I mean, is like the incense or the restaurant gift card, where his presvytera could go with him. I especially like that idea because I think, all too often, we overlook the presvytera and how important and hard her job is.

If you're going to give your priest and his wife a restaurant gift card, you might want to throw in babysitting services for the evening - if they would trust you - or arrange for 1-2 of the trusted teenagers in the parish maybe.
