Santa Claus.
I figured that one out when i was about 5, and argued with my classmates about it. Houses in south Texas didn't have chimeneys. I did believe that people on television could hear me. And I also thought "German" meant someone who had a lot of germs.

Southern Baptist doctrine That my brother was a good role model (get a job you lazy bum!) Seriously though... that the Easter Bunny clucked like a chicken thanks to those darn chocolate egg commercials... And the Easter Bunny was real. I seriously thought it was a regular white rabbit that went around laying technicolor eggs...

Modern infrastructure didn't exist until shortly before I was born. Everyone lived in wood hovels. This thanks to my mother always talking about remembering when stuff was built.

That the movie "Space Camp" really happened, when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I wrote a detailed letter to NASA about it, and in response they sent me an envelope full of space posters and refrigerator magnets and such. (But they never did explain to me what a thermal curtain failure was.)
I also believed the "Adventures in Odyssey" universe was real. I never missed an episode, listening to Focus on the Family Radio Theater every Sunday at 8:00.
And not so much a belief, but speaking of Protestant radio, I was terrified of the Al Denson song "Alcatraz". It literally gave me nightmares on several occasions, because it was one of my friend's favorites and he would always play it when I was at his house. I felt like dogs and helicopters were chasing me to drag me to the electric chair.

1. Santa Claus - till I woke up Christmas Eve and caught my parents wrapping presents (I was a devastated 5 yr old for a few days).
2. I used to listen to my radio at night, listening to the soccer on ABC. When i got too tired, i turned it off, thinking I could turn the radio back on in the morning and finish listening to the game. It took me a while to figure out that there was nothing wrong with my radio!!!

When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to be a bear. It was like first or second grade and everyone chose to be doctors, policemen or something for a project but I wanted to be a bear and thats what my project was about. A grizzly specifically.

Having grown up on Biblical Cecl B DeMille-type movies in the late 1950s/early 1960s, I thought Jesus was an English Jew because everyone who played Him seemed to have an English accent.

Funny how ads affect us. My dad hated the cigarette commercials that taught us bad grammar: "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should" He would shout at the TV: "Winston tastes good as a cigarette should" and then he would proceed to lecture us on the evils of tobacco smoke.

I did not want my child to believe in Santa Claus and be ridiculed.
However, he watched a TV program when he was three, and then a movie about Santa being threatened with explosions when he was four. He came to me crying that some people were trying to destroy Santa's village, and that there would be no Christmas presents for all the good boys and girls and that I had to do something quick.
He became a firm believe in Santa Claus in spite of my efforts.

For me it was men in trench coats with dark sunglasses. I used to believe cars and appliances were alive and they cried when we sold or broke them and that stuffed animals get lonely.

I used to hear adults say that so-and-so "never grew up", so I thought you could opt out of growing up and stay a little boy for as long as you wanted- same height, stay in kidergarden etc for years if you wanted to.

Ouch. I used to believe I would want to meet my father. Glad you grew out of that one huh?? That could be like a nightmare waiting to happen. I don't blame noone for not adopting me i was a ugly skinny mess but i turned into a reasonable looking female and the benefits of not being adopted outweigh the flip side, so no regrets. I used to hear adults say that so-and-so "never grew up" I always wonder why ppl say that to kids "why don't you grow up" always makes me look at them weird.
