Hey dudes and dudettes,

I am especially interested in some American opinions on this issue.

This link shines some light on the seemingly-majority Australian perspective (and also on the trashy writing that passes for broadsheet journalism in these parts):

I'm sorry, but that picture is enough to make me want to throw up.  That a child would be made up to look at least 20 should constitute child abuse in my opinion.  You can see what my opinion of child beauty pageants (and children in show business also) is.  I wouldn't want some pedophile be turned on by my child--and you don't know who is in the audience watching those things.

It's even gotten to the point of children getting Botox injections. It's a symptom of the sickness of vanity.

Terrible. What kind of screwed-up lives are these kids going to have with childhoods like this?

And I'm sure many or all of these parents are living vicariously through their children.

IMHO - Soft-core porno for chi-mo's.

If they want to be emaciated trollops when they are older I guess that is their right, but let them be kids for a while first.

I always wondered about that...don't pedophiles usually want the children to look like, well, children? I'm thinking about Humbert in Lolita...how he was horrified about the fact that Lolita would turn 13 and eventually lose the gangly, awkward aspect to her body.

Still, this is horrifying. The parents who allow this have some serious issues.

Kiddie pageants are a form of child abuse/endangerment.  Look at Jon Benet Ramsey.

As the Jean-Benet Ramsey story made clear over a decade ago, most Americans think that child beauty pageants are downright creepy. This particular practice is a very small subculture.

In terms of excess. But the Western world has been sexualizing children for some time. In America, it is especially jarring given the sexualizing of tweens and the Puritanical view toward the age of consent.

I see what you mean, Orthonorm.  A former priest and Matushka of mine had a 4 year old in ballet.  A few weeks before, they found out that even the little ones were going to be made up.  They took her out of that class and found a ballet teacher who didn't believe in using makeup on children and switched to that teacher instead.  I told them, "good for you", and said I wished more parents would take the same stand and end this sexualization of children (and I don't think some of these dance teachers even realize what they are doing).  I went to a recital for the group that my nieces danced for and about lost my dinner at watching the little kids.  It was a 30's type dance and the little girls were all wearing curly blonde wigs and short skirts with a shell made of sequins (and a ton of makeup).  I was so disgusted by what had been done to these little girls, I couldn't even enjoy their dance (which they did very well on).  I would have enjoyed the dance much more if the teacher had let them look like the 4 and 5 year old girls that they were instead of making them look like mini 20-year olds.

This seems to happen a lot. People are blind to the immorality of a thing until a most-extreme instance of it comes along (which is really only different in degree, not in quality) -- suddenly it is a great moral outrage.

PS: I think we all agree they are creepy and wrong, but should they be regulated or banned entirely?

The problwith regulating or banning them (and, by the way, I am 100% opposed to them, in addition to being opposed in general to beauty pagents) is this.  How do you word that law?  How do you craft a law that will ban child beauty pagents (and also, what age do we consider the cut off?  Can they have them at 10? 12? 15? 17? Or what until 18?) without giving a very good chance of inadvertently banning things most people do not want banned.

And not to mention we can't even begin to make a dent in the lives of children at extreme margins of society. At least these kids at the pageants probably have a roof, food, and maybe health insurance. While sexualized, they are not being used as a literal sexual commodities.

Sad commentary, but true nonetheless.

In our county about a few years ago they cut support to Family Social Services by about 40%. Case load went through the roof for already overtaxed social workers.

Lord have mercy on us all who voluntarily or involuntarily, whether by action or inaction harm the most vulnerable of us all.
