fathers on scripture; reccomdendations?
« on: June 10, 2004, 03:27:22 PM »
Hello all, Glory to Jesus Christ!

I am writing in the interest of receiving reccomendations of any particular (preferably ancient, i.e. catholic and orthodox) fathers who expounded extensively on the sacred scriptures. You see, my local university library has a very wide selection of writings from the early church fathers, as well as some of the more recent orthodox fathers, and I would like to know of some who comment very much on scripture that I may take out some books.

I have the Orthodox new testament, which a great resource, but I am interested more in the fathers' comments on the books of the old testament, though if there are some who commented on the new testament as well, that would be lovely  :) .

And so, I thank you for your attention, and your responses.

Peace be with you all, and may God bless you.

-Justin

On New Testament I recommend the Commentaries of St. Theophylact

On the old testament I do not know of any complete translations but check for St. John Chrysostom, St. Cyril of Alexandria and St. Theodoret of Cyrus.

Glory Forever!
If you can get your hands on <Bible and Holy Fathers for Orthodox>edited by Johanna Manley, and published by Saint Vladimirs, it is very helpful. unfortunatley, it is an expensive book. My parish library has a copy, and it may be just what you are looking for.

not to close discussion here; but just an aside to spirors;

unfortunately, I do not think I could afford such a tome, though I will definately look to that for a next purchase.

Do you know if there are any places online with excerpts from it? If so, I would like to take a peek so as to better decide whether or not to get it  :)

peace,
-Justin

Justin,

I don't think there are places online to read parts of it.  What I would suggest is that you borrow it through the interlibrary loan system.  I don't own that particular volume, but I do own one of Manley's other editions of Patristic Commentary "Grace for Grace: The Psalter and the Holy Fathers" and it is phenomenal.

Interlibrary loan  should be able to get it. If not you might ask around local parishes and see if a priest has a copy you could look at. Its beyond my means as well right now

Hey, thanks all for the info, I will certainly look into that book then.

David; may I ask you for a somewhat detailed review or description of that particular book and its contents? The book of psalms is one in particular for which I would like to find the comments of the fathers  :) .

Thank you once again,

-Justin
