Good question. I've never seen anything like it before. All I could Google up was here: http://www.artemotore.com/santi.html"Christopher -dog faced- church of St. George of Cegelkoy" And I've never heard of that church either. Demetri

http://www.ucc.ie/milmart/chrsorig.htmlThe identification of St. Christopher as a member of the tribe of the Marmaritae is vital to the correct understanding of a passage which has caused more problems than most, the description of his nativeland present in all the earliest surviving accounts of his martyrdom, both Greek and Latin, according to which he came from a land of cannibals and dog-headed peoples. The Greek tradition came to interpret this passage absolutely literally, and this is why Byzantine icons often depicted St. Christopher with a dog's head. http://www.patriarchate.org/visit/photo2/html/st_christopher.html========== Orthodoc

Excellent Orthodoc! Now why couldn't I find that? Unusual icon, to say the least...

I love this icon, because of what it says about the absolute universality of Christ's saving work (for those who receive it, of course).

Interesting--But I though Christopher was just a popular myth?
Sorry folks that was just a joke--but really isn't funny as that is the line now accordign to many RC Priests I have spoken too.

I thought the dog's head was a representation of St. Christopher being a very physically unattractive man, with a face like a dog's. That's what I've read anyway.

I heard that he was very devout, as well as being very very very attractive. He asked God to change his face so that he wouldn't get distracted by the women tempting him. God made him so ugly... I guess you could say dog ugly, that he is depicted with a dog's head.... Quite possibly an old-wives tale, but that's what I got when I was about 10 years old and noticed it as a fresco at a church.

Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

This is quite an interesting thread!
I hadn't heard any of these things about St. Christopher until now. That icon is unlike any I've ever seen before too!
I am used to seeing St. Christopher depicted as a man of large stature carrying the Christ Child on his shoulder - are we talking about the same St. Christopher?
