Trying to remember sitcom.
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:43:27 PM »
Christ is risen!

I'm trying to remember the name of a sit com (American) of the 1990s I believe.  The main plot was a rather responsible (if dorky) young married couple have her less than responsible sister and her rather never do well husband living in the guest house or some such thing: the running gag was they basically dependent on the first couple.  I can picture the actors but can't remember their names.  Any ideas?
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.

I tried and I couldn't figure it out. I can't seem to recall a 90's sitcom involving two married couples living together.
I stopped posting here in August 2011 because of stark disagreement with the policies of the administration and moderating team of the forums. If you desire, feel free to PM me, message me on Facebook (link in profile), or email me: cddombrowski@gmail.com

Remember that sitcom from the early 90's about those people who lived on a farm after a nuclear war?  I have no idea what ti was called, but the show only lasted a couple of episodes.
Men may dislike truth, men may find truth offensive and inconvenient, men may persecute the truth, subvert it, try by law to suppress it. But to maintain that men have the final power over truth is blasphemy, and the last delusion. Truth lives forever, men do not.

What's the name of that sitcom where the wife is intelligent, attractive, and witty, and the husband is an overweight buffoon?

That's almost every sitcom ever. But I believe you are referring to King of Queens.

I think The Honeymooners got that particular trope rolling.

That 70's Show was only one of a few to break that mold.

Btw, in Saudi Arabia "I Love Lucy" is banned because of perceived disrespect and rebelliion of Lucy against her husband.

Why is the buffon getting the hot chick the norm, rather than the genuinely dorky girl (ie: me) getting a superhot guy? And beautiful female celebrities wearing messy hair and glasses for the first half of the movie doesn't count.

I loved Yes, Dear! And I can relate to King of Queens as my cousin and her husband are spitting images of Doug and Carrie in almost every way possible. I love visiting them because it's like the show never went off the air. ;)

My co-worker and I were just musing on this last week.  I believe it's a cultural thing, that Americans can't fathom such a thing happening.

I wonder if the stereotypical situation happens in other culture's sitcoms?

Men are pigs. Women aren't. The problem for Hollywood is: how do they create a product that won't alienate a large portion of the audience on either side? If they don't give the pigs a pretty girl, they'll lose them. A guy doesn't care about story or personality, they either need big explosions or an attractive woman. Women, on the other hand, being vastly superior to the pigs, do indeed like eye candy, but will nonetheless settle for other things (a love story, a good story, an interesting character, etc.) So Hollywood gives the pigs the pretty girl, and tries to keep the women happy with other stuff. It's just a theory... but I'm pretty sure it's based on facts (e.g. men are definitely pigs).

But to be fair, advertisers have found that if you portray men as dumb the commercial is a bigger hit. I think this holds true for many sit-coms where the Woman is often the smarter one.

Ah, yeah.  I love Jane Curtain and John Lithgow. Wayne Knight wasn't as creepy as on Seinfeld.
