This post caught my eye and I wanted to go a bit further. Not to veer too far off the track, but when my husband and I were looking for a marriage counselor, it was unbelievably difficult to find one that accepted much less respected and honored (rather than disparaged and even ridiculed) our Orthodox Christian pov, values and beliefs.
What kind of stuff are marriage counsolers teaching these days? |

Well, here's some things I remember from my marriage counseling in 2002... That marriage is a cross. That marriage will be filled with hardships. That marriage will be an overwhelmingly wonderful, positive and rewarding experience. That you should wait till marriage to have sex. That marriage isn't about "meeting someone half way" and giving 50%, but rather about giving 100% of yourself, so that even though you will often meet your spouse somewhere around the middle, nonetheless you should expect that sometimes you'll have to pull the majority of the weight, and you shouldn't get mad or frustrated during those times. If you're young and married and physically able, you should be open to having kids. Marriage is a life long commitment, and splitting up isn't an option. The husband belonds to the wife, and the wife to the husband, you can no longer spend your time, money, etc. just as you see fit. Hmm, well that's all I remember at the moment. I guess I should mention that our marriage counseling was through a priest, and the materials he used (VHS and books) was also designed by a priest).

Christ is risen! Apparently no one else had marriage counselling... My then wife "horrified the marriage councelors" (my exwife's words), so it didn't go very far. We've been in divorce court ever since. |
