BBC: Optimistic People Live Longer!
« on: April 19, 2011, 06:46:04 AM »
Was listening to BBC Radio's Discovery today and it was a program about optimism and how it's been proven by research that optimistic people live 8 years longer than pessimists and suffer from lower blood pressure, lower diabetes risks, less cardiovascular problems, etc...

Always look on the bright side of life...

(I think there is 1 bad word in there, just for those sensitive to it)

Forgive me, I had too... ;)

GRUMPY old men like television’s Victor Meldrew can be happy about one thing – they will probably outlive optimists.

Scientists have found that being cantankerous is the key to reaching old age.

According to researchers at University of Pittsburgh optimists live longer, healthier lives than pessimists. The researchers studied death rates and rates of chronic health conditions of 100,000 women ages 50 and over since 1994 who were a part of the Women's Health Initiative study.

If you really want to live longer, then you can start with your attitude. Your way of thinking can not only impact the quality of your life, but also how long you actually live. In 2002, researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., found that optimistic people decreased their risk of early death by 50 percent compared with those who leaned more towards pessimism.

A study of 100,000 women presented at the American Psychosomatic Society's annual meeting Thursday found a strong correlation between optimism and a person's risk for cancer-related death, heart disease and early death.

A positive outlook may help guard against heart disease and increase the chances of a long life, a new study suggests, bolstering previous findings.

Researchers from Duke University Medical Center followed 2,800 patients who'd been hospitalized with heart disease. Those with the most optimistic attitudes about making a full recovery were more likely to live longer than their pessimistic counterparts, according to lead author John Barefoot.

Would people assume that religious people are more optimistic?

Because although I have my faith, I tend to believe that I am pessimistic.

For future reference, Randall has installed a very handy search feature on the XKCD website with texts and descriptions of all the comics so you can find whatever you're looking for.
