My godfather and his immediate and extended family are Lebanese and have told me horror stories of Israeli actions against Orthodox Christians...any way to find out whether this stuff (on the website; I have no reason to doubt my godfather) is propaganda or legit?

We have a parishioner who is of Lebanese descent and just returned from Lebanon a few weeks ago.

He reported that things are relatively peaceful. He has some family members who left Beirut in the early 80s after a missile flew their apartment, and have recently returned home. When I asked him how peace has managed to break out he said "Because the Israelis have left".

From his perspective the presence of Iraeli soldiers was a point of contention with the Muslims. The Israelis were fighting the Syrians in the Bekaa valley as well as terrorist PLO groups. When the Israelis pulled out, the fighting in and around Lebanon stopped because the Israelis were the focus of the Muslim munitions, and vice versa.

The Israelis though did support Christian groups who were also fighting the Muslims. It would seem that after more than 20 years of war every Lebanese, whether Christian or Syrian has become tired of fighting and has just decided to "give peace a chance".

This process has been made easier without the Israelis beingin Lebanon. It is important though to rember that many Christian Phalangists were supplied by and fought with the Israelis in the 80s.

Another thing worth noting though is that when Israel goes to war it tneds to be an all-outthing. In the mind of the Israeli soldiers they are fighting for their right to exist while surronded by enemies who want kill every lastone of them. This results in an approach that is shall-we-say, less concerned about "collateral damage" as we call it in the west.

WARNING: the linked page has some very graphic pictures of violence.  Also the pictures under "Photos Show Rape of Iraqi Women by US Occupation Forces" are sexually explicit.

Although I have little doubt that Arab muslims and Christians both suffer under the Israelis, the "porn" pictures are most likely those recently reported to be just that -staged porn photos.
As to Lebanon, that situation was hard to follow, like the rest of the region, as to who was on whose side and for what reasons.

Yeah, I saw a story that said those photos were a rather disturbing hoax.

Had a feeling there was too much propaganda here.  Thanks.

The Israelis though did support Christian groups who were also fighting the Muslims. It would seem that after more than 20 years of war every Lebanese, whether Christian or Syrian has become tired of fighting and has just decided to "give peace a chance".

Naturally, friction still exists as it always will, but the Lebanese are too entrepreneurial not to allow themselves to pick up and continue building their lives (unfortunately that appears to entail emigrating) after sufficient years of killing.

Alliances with the Israelis were Maronite initiatives, and the Christians did not form one front (nor did the Maronites themselves).  Political affiliations played their role, too (communism for example is a strong pillar of identity for its adherents of whatever religious faction), as did Israel's involvement, the switching of sides (observe the Syrians), and intra-religious and intra-sectarian fighting.

Jordan and Black September factor in as well.

As for the rape pictures, I cannot comment on their veracity, but that Israeli soldiers would commit such acts should not be surprising.
