Mijn stem
Bij het ruw houten kruis,
heeft mijn stem geklonken
Kruisig Hem!
Daar werd de beker leeggedronken.
Valselijk beschuldigd
stond U daar terecht.
Mijn overtredingen en zonden
hebben Uw vonnis beslecht.
Ik ben mijn eigen weg gegaan.
Wist het allemaal zo goed.
Mijn eigen mening stond voorop,
ik wist hoe het moest.
Totdat ik ging beseffen,
dat ik niet alles weet.
Erkennen, dat ik Iemand nodig heb,
maakte mijn omkering compleet.
Aan Hem gaf ik mijn leven.
Hou niet langer alles in de hand.
Hij bestuurt mijn levensboot,

Can only read and understand the language when spoken, with some difficulty. And I know exactly nil in the way of poetry. But please keep contributing. Beste Daniel, Ik dien in de Klooster van de Profeet Elias in St Hubert. Tot nu toe ben ik nog niet in de Kerk in Eindhoven geweesd, maar ik heb wel de Vaders ontmoet. Het is een hele mooie foto. O, u bent van het klooster in Sint-Hubert. Ik was daar ook een keer geweest, op de dag van de begrafenis van vader Pahom. Mooi kerk, met heel veel iconen overal. Onze Vader in het Nederlands / Lords Prayer in Dutch |

My friend and I had a South African bus driver once so my friend asked if he was a Boer. He said, "No. I'm a truck driver." HAHAHA! That joke only the Dutch or the Boeren would understand Maar waarom leer je eigenlijk Afrikaans? No - makes perfect sense to me too (I hope). He's saying he's not a farmer. I'm not at all fluent, but I'm familiar with Plattdeutsch (it was my grandfather's only language until secondary school) and it seems to help me understand a fair bit of both Dutch and Afrikaans - though the spellings are odd. There's no standard orthography for Platt but what would be Bauer in Hochdeutsch is more like Bur in Platt, which sounds very similar to Boer. Also, Cyrillic, when you say "Ik spreek geen Nederlands" how is the "g" pronounced? Do the Nederlandse clear their throat with the "g" like they do in Afrikaans or is it different?

One time I read something in Dutch to my grandma and she said it sounded like Plattdeutsch to her. Are they related somehow? It looks like the Afrikaans word for Plattdeutsch is Nederduits.
There's a sort of continuum. Low German dialects experienced either very few or none of the sound changes of the High German consonant shift, and so, they preserve, like Dutch, unshifted consonants. For example, many Low German dialects will use ik instead of ich, Appel instead of Apfel, geven instead of geben, schip instead of schiff, etc. Low German dialects can be rather easily mutually intelligible with Dutch, and difficult to understand for speakers of Standard German (that is probably why your grandmother said the Dutch you were reading sounded like Plattdeutsch). |

I recorded it since I don't know how to use the phonetic alphabet. Don't ask the Belgians how to pronounce the 'g' though. Their pronunciation of it is horrible. Zijn er ook Belgen hier? Neen.
