It is the highest degree of monasticism in the Byzantine tradition. It entails a very strict ascetism and prayer rule above that of stavrophore monk coupled with semi-eremitism.

The headcover for schema-monk is known as 'kukulion'. The Armenian head cover is perhaps a variation of the Egyptian headcover. There are two types of 'kukulion', cone-shaped as in the Armenian church and more rounded one as in rest of the OO, except perhaps the Ethiopians.

Very interesting. I had no idea that the EO had a kolonsoa like the OO monks-especially the Coptic ones. All Coptic monks wear the kolonsoa (or the hood that the monk appears to be wearing in the first posters' pic. In the Coptic church, the highest level of monastics wear the holy eskeem, which is a like a net of many leather crosses, that is usually worn under the typical clothing-except on the day of ordination when it is worn above. Even some bishops dont have the honor of wearing the eskeem.
