The part that blows my mind: "Police said the girl's disappearance could be viewed as a disgrace by her family and want to protect her from any possible 'honor crime,' according to the station. "

I agree with you entirely. There should be no such idea, however, it is a realistic thing as I have heard stories of this type from close personal friends about relatives, especially involving inter-faith marriages.
