How to insert a 'spoiler' alert?
« on: March 23, 2011, 03:50:54 AM »
Hi

Is there a way of covering/shielding what you say in a thread, for example when discussing a film or book etc.. and you don't want to wreck it for others who have not read or seen it or don't want to know, something like a 'spoiler' shield available on this forum?  and if someone wants to read what you wrote they can click  onto it or unshield it.

Or is it best to start a new topic?
 Thank you

Unfortunately there's no built-in option like that on this forum, as I've seen on other forums. It'd be a nice thing to have, but I think Fr. Anastasios and company are doing all they can just to keep things that they already have running smoothly--not from lack of know-how, but just from lack of time/resources. Fwiw, you could always manually hide the text by changing the color to white, for example:

*Spoiler: highlight hidden text below*

This is a spoiler.

Yes, it is.

That is to say, I think it is.

Maybe it is.

Possibly.

Maybe not.

It is a fairly straightforward mod, but until the forum is upgraded to SMF 2.0, I wouldn't expect many additional mods to be added.  Thankfully, 2.0 expanded the vanilla features greatly and tweaked the modification packaging/system.  In 1.1.x you constantly have to frankenstein things together, often with surprising results.  Just like how, before, if you had the ability to add to or modify the forum calendar, the former chat programme decided to grant you access to other chat member's IP addresses.   :-\  Why?  Because it decided to look towards how the permissions on the calendar were set up when it was assigning chat moderator privileges.

Sometimes people put

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
in their posts, but I think that people are too easily tempted to read the next line.

Hey, did this work? Did you know that Harry Potter dies in the last book?  ;D

Another question,

I am having problems inserting a quote and then answering, my answer seems to turn up in the quote,and/ or is hard to write because it seems to 'bounce' underneath the quote. This has only been happening lateley, not sure what I am doing wrong. :-[

And no he didn't die. I am not a Harry Potter fan but I DO know that.  :D Ha, so my spoiler method didn't work.

Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute...

Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth.

If you wish to use humour, you probably should realise that it doesn't translate well in text only. I can't read your mind.
